Fluridone Aquatic Herbicide (Sonar)

Fluridone Aquatic Herbicide (Sonar), manufactured by Alligare, is a potent, selective aquatic herbicide that replaces Sonar AS to control various types of water weeds, such as duckweeds, and plants growing in freshwater areas like ponds, lakes, drainage canals, and more, for up to a year or longer without harming desired foliage.

This product's active ingredient, Fluridone 41.7%, is an organic chemical that will slowly eliminate troublesome aquatic weeds within 45 to 90 days without reducing oxygen levels that may harm fish.

Fluridone Aquatic Herbicide (Sonar) will kill plants that float on the top of the water or that grow on the bottom without interrupting fishing, swimming, drinking, and other activities. Once applied, treated water can be used immediately for swimming, drinking (potable), and fishing, thus allowing recreational activities to continue.

Tools Needed

To make applications, a skid sprayer, backpack sprayer, or pump sprayer is needed. We suggest using weighted trailing hoses to make underwater applications for submerged vegetation.

How to Use

• Step 1: Determine how much Fluridone Aquatic Herbicide (Sonar) you will need by measuring the size of the treatment area. For aquatic applications, you will need to calculate the surface area acreage. To do this, measure the length and width of the aquatic site in feet to get the square footage, then divide it by 44 (length X width = square footage (square footage / 44 = surface acre)). You will also need the average water depth in feet of the treatment site by measuring different locations of the water body and dividing the measurements by how many measurements were made. Fluridone Aquatic Herbicide (Sonar) applications to ponds can be measured at a ppb (parts per billion) concentration of 45 ppb at 3.8 fl. oz. per acre for every foot of average water depth, or 90 ppb at 7.7 fl. oz per acre per foot of depth. For example, if you measured an average water depth of 3 feet for your waterbody, you would need to mix 11.8 fl. oz. for the 45 ppb concentration or 23.4 fl. oz. for the 90 ppb concentration per treated acre. Applications should be made in 5 to 100 gallons of water per acre (Check the application rate table for details).
• Step 2: Fill the spray tank halfway with water in a sprayer of your choice. If using a skid sprayer, begin the agitation process during this step. Shake the Fluridone container well before pouring, then add the correct amount of product with parts per billion to the average depth rate to the tank and continue the agitation process during application.
• Step 3: Make a single application or split applications depending on the size and conditions of your waterbody. Spray the surface or subsurface evenly with the Fluridone mixture until the entire area has been treated. For effective control, contact of this product with the target plants must be maintained for at least 45 days. Effective control is reduced if conditions exist that dilute the concentration of this product in the water.

Where to Use

Fluridone Aquatic Herbicide can be used on freshwater ponds, lakes, reservoirs, drainage canals, and irrigation canals (including dry or dewatered areas of these sites).

Do not apply to saltwater or brackish water areas. Vegetation that grows on the bottom of the body of water can be treated with the proper hoses and equipment.

When to Use

Apply when you notice the emergence of aquatic weeds on your water body. This product achieves optimal results when applied before weeds begin to grow actively.

Safety Information

Fluridone Aquatic Herbicide (Sonar) is safe to use around children, pets, and livestock when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing or applying the product.

If application rates are 150 ppb or less, treated water may be used immediately without a waiting period for drinking (potable) water (including watering livestock and pets), fishing, or swimming.

Special Considerations

Fluridone Aquatic Herbicide has a list of water plants that it will control, a list it will partially control, and a list it will not control at all. Before applying this product, it is essential to read the product label and know the type of plants that must be controlled.

Water treated with this product should not be used for irrigation for 30 days following application.
