Firstrate Herbicide
04/12/26
Firstrate Herbicide, manufactured by DOW/CORTEVA, is a water-dispensable granule that offers complete control of troublesome broadleaf and glyphosate-resistant weeds in soybeans and versatility in application time.
This herbicide contains cloransulam-methyl 84%, which is very effective on many glyphosate-resistant weeds, such as ragweed or pigweed. Firstrate Herbicide can be applied throughout the year following different crop rotation periods as a soil-applied program, preplant incorporated, preplant surface, preemergence, or postemergence.
Firstrate Herbicide is designed for maximum flexibility and convenience. It easily tank mixes with many other pre- and post-emergence grass and broadleaf herbicides. This herbicide offers safety in weed treatment when applied according to the label instructions in rotations with soybeans, wheat, and more.
Tools Needed
You will need a handheld pump sprayer, backpack sprayer, or hose sprayer.
Additional products such as nonionic surfactant, crop oil concentrate, or methylated seed oil may be used. To broaden the spectrum of controlled weeds, Firstrate Herbicide may be tank-mixed with other herbicides such as glyphosate, glufosinate, paraquat, 2,4-D, etc.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine how much Firstrate Herbicide to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. Find the square footage by measuring the treatment areas' length and width in feet, then multiplying them together (length X width = square footage). For acreage, take the square footage and divide it by one acre (square footage / 43,560 = acreage). For preplant and post-emergent treatments, use 0.3 to 0.6 oz. of Firstrate Herbicide per 15 gallons of water per acre. Do not apply more than 0.6 oz. of product per acre per year as a post-emergent application.
- Step 2: Fill the tank of your selected sprayer halfway with the required amount of water, pour in the needed amount of Firstrate Herbicide, and then fill the rest of the way with the remaining half of water. Once filled, close the spray tank lid and agitate until the solution is thoroughly mixed. Maintain continuous agitation throughout the application to prevent the material from becoming settled.
- Step 3: Apply the mixed solution of Firstrate Herbicide into the top 1 to 3 inches of the seedbed for preplant treatments and treat the top and bottom of emerged weeds for post-emergent applications. If the acre has not met a total of 0.6 oz., a second Firstrate Herbicide may be applied to germinating weeds later. Irrigate treated areas with 0.5 inches of water at least a week after application to move the product into the soil to treat potential germinating weeds.
Where to Use
Firstrate Herbicide can be used in soybeans.
When to Use
Use Firstrate Herbicide on calm, warm days with low wind activity and on soil that is settled but not compacted, frozen, or snow-covered ground. Preemergence treatments should be applied two days after planting before weed and crop emergence.
Emerged weeds can be treated with a post-emergent application anytime prior to the R2 (full flower) growth stage of soybeans. However, application prior to the full emergence of the first soybean trifoliate leaf may cause temporary yellowing or chlorosis of soybeans.
Do not apply within 70 days before harvest of soybeans nor within 25 days before harvest of forage or hay.
Safety Information
Firstrate Herbicide is safe to use around children and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing or handling this product.
Do not allow children, pets, workers, or other individuals to enter treated areas until 12 hours after application and until the product has dried.
Special Considerations
Firstrate Herbicide does not control known ALS-resistant biotypes of listed weeds.
Crop oil concentrate or methylated seed oil plus urea ammonium nitrate is preferred when weeds are under drought stress but may increase crop injury.
