Chapin Hand Spreader
Chapin Hand Spreader
The Chapin Spreader, manufactured by Chapin, is ideal for spreading granular products in your lawn as needed in the spring and fall. The Chapin Spreader is easy to hold and easier to use with the adjuster at thumbs reach. This spreader has a wide range of uses from spreading granules on your lawn in the spring and fall to spreading salt on your driveway in the winter. It is constructed to be rust and corrosion resistant, and can hold up to .3 gallons or 2.14 pounds of product.
Tools Needed
No special tools are needed, but we recommend wearing nitrile gloves or chemical resistant gloves, and wearing long pants during application to protect your skin.
How to Use
- Step 1: Clear lawn of any debris and mow lawn for best results for treating with granular treatment.
- Step 2: Check spreader to ensure it is clean from any previous granular treatments.
- Step 3: Scoop or pour granules into spreader, based on granular products label.
- Step 4: To use spreader, use the hand crank on the right side to spread. To adjust the rate of application, use the trigger on the handle to the desired rate. Apply at the rate recommended based on the label for the granular treatment you are using.
Where to Use
This tool would be used outside when applying granular treatment to your lawn.
When to Use
Use the Chapin Hand Spreader when you have a smaller area that requires treatment, such as a small to medium-sized lawn or flower beds. Due to its size, it is generally recommended for smaller treatment areas for the operator's convenience.
Safety Information
Always read the full label of the product being applied with the spreader for proper application rates and safety.
Special Considerations
Before each use, always inspect the spreader to ensure it is clean from prior usage and that it's still in proper working order. You can check this by turning the crank and opening the trigger.

Keith's Pro Tips | "When using the Chapin Spreader, make sure that you read the instructions on the product that you will be using to make sure that you are setting the spreader accurately. The settings will vary depending on what products you use." |
Product Drawbacks | This spreader requires constant cranking by the operator to disperse product, potentially leading to fatigue over time. It is also not recommended to use a hand spreader for larger turf areas due to its limited size. |
