Captain Jack's Slug Magic Granules

Captain Jack's Slug Magic Granules, manufactured by Bonide, is an excellent slug and snail control granule that makes it easier for residential gardeners to maintain a lush and thriving landscape with one simple treatment. 

The pellets contain iron phosphate as their active ingredient, a naturally occurring compound that is safe for pets and wildlife. This active ingredient will disrupt the feeding behavior of slugs and snails and help lure them to the product itself in an area as large as 1,000 sq. ft.

Tools Needed

It will need to be applied with a broadcast spreader, handheld spreader, push spreader, or by hand with a chemical-purpose teaspoon.

How to Use

• Step 1: Determine how much Captain Jack's Slug Magic Granules to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. Find the square footage by measuring the treatment area's length and width in feet, then multiplying them together (length X width = square footage). Apply bait evenly at the rate of 0.5-1 lb. per 1,000 square feet, or for smaller areas, 0.15 oz., or 1 level teaspoon, per square yard. Depending on the treatment area these rates will vary and be based on one of the rates above. So, it would be best to check with the product label as some restrictions may apply.
• Step 2: Adjust the spreader calibration, and load the proper amount of product in.
• Step 3: For outdoor ornamentals, scatter bait in a 6-inch circular band around the base of the plants to be protected. If plants are next to a grassy area, spread the bait between the ornamentals and the grass. For vegetables, scatter the bait around the perimeter of the vegetable plot. If slugs or snails are inside the rows, then scatter the bait on the soil around the base of the plants and between the rows. Reapply as the bait is consumed or at least every two weeks. Do not place in piles. If the ground is dry, wet it before applying bait. The product works best when the soil is moist but with little or no standing water.

Captain Jack's Slug Magic Granules can be used around vegetables, fruit trees, citrus, berries, ornamentals, shrubs, flowers, trees, lawns, gardens, and in greenhouses.

It is intended for residential use only.

When to Use

Apply the bait during the evening, as slugs and snails travel and feed mostly by night or early morning.

Do not apply when rainfall is expected to occur within the next 24 hours after application. 

Safety Information

Captain Jack's Slug Magic Granules are safe to use around children and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling and applying this product. 

It can be used around domestic animals (pets) and wildlife.

Special Consideration

The bait is ingested by slugs and snails when they travel from their hiding places to plants. Ingestion, even in small amounts, will cause them to cease feeding. This physiological effect of the bait gives immediate protection to the plants even though the slugs and snails may remain in the area.

After eating the bait, the slugs and snails cease feeding, become less mobile, and begin to die within three to six days. Dead slugs and snails may not be visible as they often crawl away to secluded places to die. Plant protection will be observed in the decrease in plant damage.
