How to Use

Pouring Black Pond Dye Into Pond

  • Step 1: Determine how much Alligare Black Pond Dye to use by measuring the size, surface depth, and volume of the body of water. To do this, you will need measure the body of waters length and width in feet and multiply them together (length X width = square footage). To get the average depth of your pond, you will need to take 3 depth measurements: one at the shallow end, one at the middle and one at the deep end. Add all the different depth measurements and divide by the number of measurements taken to get the depth. For example, if your pond's surface area is 400 ft. by 150 ft. and the average depth is 9.17 ft., multiply all these together to give you a volume of 550,200 cubic feet. To find the volume of body of water multiply the surface area (square footage taken) and average depth together (surface area X average depth = body water volume).
  • Step 2: Shake the Alligare Black Pond Dye container well before application. Measure the appropriate amount of Alligare Black Pond Dye into a bucket based on your pond measurements. A standard application is 1 gallon of Alligare Black Pond Dye per 4 acre feet or 1,300,000 gallons of water.
  • Step 3: Pour the Alligare Black Pond Dye in intervals around the shoreline of the body of water and allow the natural movement of the water to disperse the dye. For larger bodies of water, you may need to use a slow moving boat to disperse more evenly throughout the water. Wait 24 hours to allow the pond or body of water to become colored.
  • Step 4: For deeper coloration, wait until 24 hours have passed after first application. Apply the same amount as first application and wait until 24 hours have passed for full water coloration.

Where to Use

Alligare Black Pond Dye may be used in ponds, water fountains, along shorelines, and ornamental bodies of water.

When to Use

Use Alligare Black Pond Dye earlier in the year (Spring), then apply again, as needed, throughout the year to maintain color intensity.

Do not apply before or immediately following heavy rainfall events that could result in an overflow situation.
