Outrider Herbicide
Outrider Herbicide
Outrider Herbicide, manufactured by Monsanto, is an effective water-dispersible granule (WDG) used for selective pre-emergent and post-emergent control of grassy and broadleaf weeds in non-crop lands and sites that might require bare ground vegetation management, such as fence rows and more.
As a systemic herbicide, it works by absorbing into the plants through the plant's roots and foliage. Once 2 hours have passed after application this product become rainfast to prevent needless retreatments making it an economical product.
Outrider Herbicide offers broad-spectrum control of annual and perennial broadleaf and grassy weeds like nutsedge without harming turfgrasses.
Tools Needed
To use Outrider Herbicide for general weed and grass control, it is recommended to use either a pressurized pump or backpack sprayer, handheld spray guns, or similar spraying equipment. For large applications, use a professional spray rig.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine how much Outrider Herbicide to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. To do this, measure the length and width of the treatment area in feet then multiply them together (length X width = square footage). For acreage, take the square footage and divide it by one acre (square footage / 43,560 sq. ft. = acre). The typical application rate for Outrider is 0.75 to 2.0 oz. per acre in at least 10 to 50 gallons of water. For small applications with a handheld sprayer, apply 1 oz. of Outrider and a quart of nonionic surfactant at a rate of 2 gallons of spray solution per 1,000 sq. ft. Your application rate will vary on targeted plant, dilutions ratio, and application method. The combined total of all type of applications of this product must not exceed 2.66 oz. of product per acre per year.
- Step 2: Fill your spray tank about 3/4 full with water. Add the required amount of Outrider Herbicide per label directions. Then fill the rest of the tank with water to create proper agitation and a thorough mix. For post-emergent applications, a surfactant must be mixed into the solution at a 25% by volume dilution unless being used with Roundup Pro herbicides.
- Step 3: Spray the targeted grasses or weeds, making sure that you get even coverage. Use a coarse spray only and do not spray to the point of runoff.
Where to Use
Outrider Herbicide can be used in non-crop areas, on dormant or established bermudagrass or bahiagrass, roadsides, pasture and rangeland sites in states west of Mississippi River, non-crop tree sites, native grasses and conservation reserve program (CRP) sites, winter wheat, and spring wheat.
Do not use on or around golf courses, residential turf sites, athletic fields, commercial turf sites, sod and turfgrass seed farms, bodies of water, and known habitats for threatened or endangered species.
When to Use
Use Outrider Herbicide as a pre-emergent preventative to stop labeled grasses and weeds from sprouting. This can also be used as a post-emergent -- after weeds have sprouted -- to take care of and eliminate troublesome grasses and weeds.
In the state of Texas, applications of this product applied before September 30 will not delay green-up of bermudagrass the following spring; however some temporary discoloration of desirable spring germinating wildflowers may occur.
Do not seed any crop, except wheat, any sooner than 3 months after the last application of this product. There are no crop rotation restrictions for wheat.
Safety Information
Outrider Herbicide is safe to use around children and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.
Keep people and pets off treated areas until spray solution has dried.
Wheat forage may be grazed immediately after application of this product. Do not harvest wheat for hay within 30 days of Outrider Herbicide application. Do not harvest wheat for grain within 55 days of application of this product.
Special Considerations
Unless being used alongside Roundup Pro, Outrider Herbicide requires that a non-ionic surfactant to be mixed into solution for post-emergent control. Tank mixtures that have amine formulated herbicides will decrease Outrider's effectiveness.

Q:Someone recommended this for Virginia buttonweed but I don’t see it on the target list. Thoughts?8/19/23A:Outrider Herbicide is not labeled for Virginia buttonweed so it wouldn't control this weed. If your friend had success then great, but that does mean you will have the same results. We recommend MSM Turf Herbicide (Manor), which will kill Virginia buttonweed. https://www.solutionsstores.com/msm-turf-herbicide-manor

Q:Using hand spray for Nut Sedge in lawn. How much Outrider per gallon? Is it measured by weight or volume?7/25/23A:Outrider Herbicide cannot be used on lawns. Depending on your weed, another general post-emergent herbicide we recommend is either MSM Turf Herbicide (Manor) or Fahrenheit Herbicide which can be used on lawns. https://www.solutionsstores.com/msm-turf-herbicide-manor https://www.solutionsstores.com/fahrenheit-herbicide

Q:Can I use outrider on a wick/wipe to the same effect as spraying?8/2/22A:Outrider Herbicide comes as a water dispensable granule so a wipe application would not be recommended. Due to its formulation you will need to use either a pressurized pump or backpack sprayer, handheld spray guns, or similar spraying equipment. For large applications, use a professional spray rig.
