"Apply Metsulfuron directly over problem weeds and a few feet from where the weeds grow to prevent any seeds from spraying. Apply during calm days where rain is not in the immediate forecast"

Metsulfuron

If your turf is being invaded by broadleaf and grassy weeds, you can consider several herbicides to address the issue effectively. One such active ingredient that does a tremendous job against problem weeds is metsulfuron. Metsulfuron, popularly known as MSM, is highly regarded in turfgrass management.

On this page, we will share some brief info about metsulfuron, its mode of action, and why it works so well. You can also use this page to shop our top recommended products containing metsulfuron.

What is Metsulfuron?

Spraying Metsulfuron Herbicide in Backpack Sprayer

Metsfulfuron is known fully as metsulfuron-methyl but is more commonly known by the abbreviation MSM. It is from the sulfonylurea family of herbicides. It is an organic active ingredient that can deliver pre- and post-emergent control of broadleaf weeds and several annual grasses.

Metsulfuron is a selective herbicide that can control target broadleaf weeds, grasses, trees, and invasive brush while not harming selecting desired grasses.

Originally, this product was used on agricultural lands to remove invasive weeds around crops, but it then expanded into treating commercial and residential landscapes. Some MSM-based products are restricted-use products that can only be applied by licensed applicators.

How Does Metsulfuron Work?

Mode of Action

Metsulfuron controls weeds by halting cell division in the shoots and roots of plants, resulting in the death of target plants.

Mesulfuron controls many different species of weeds, but it is most recommended for post-emergent control of bahiagrass, Virginia buttonweed, and dollar weed.

Benefits of Metsulfuron

Metsulfuron is a potent herbicide active ingredient with a very low use rate. Another advantage of metsulfuron is that it is a selective herbicide—it will only eliminate the labeled weeds you want going.

Use metsulfuron for weed control on warm-season grasses such as Bermudagrass, centipedegrass, St. Augustine, and Georgiagrass.

Drawbacks of Metsulfuron

Metsulfuron products in a dry flowable formulation need to be agitated constantly to break apart the pieces and suspend the product properly. If the product is not agitated well, it may not suspend properly, causing an inaccurate ratio of the active ingredient. It can also clog the sprayer if the product is not broken down well enough.

Do not use metsulfuron for weed control on cool-season grasses, as the active ingredient works best on warm-season grass types. Also, do not apply metsulfuron to turf less than a year old or ornamentals less than 2 years old. Oak trees are sensitive to metsulfuron, so extra care is needed around the tree when applying it.

Is Metsulfuron Safe?

Metsulfuron is safe to use when applied according to label directions. When handling metsulfuron (or any of the other chemicals we carry), proper personal protective equipment (PPE) should be worn before handling or applying. Gloves, goggles, and long-sleeved clothing should be the minimum standard. Please refer to the label for proper safety instructions.

What To Expect

Sprayer Metsulfuron

Metsulfuron-based herbicide products will stay in the soil for several weeks after application. You should see improvement in your lawn health in 1 to 2 weeks, and most weeds will be cleared after 3 weeks. Some weeds are more resilient and may require another application in 4 to 6 weeks.

Do not exceed more than 0.5 oz. per acre within nine months, and do not water the product after applying it.
