Imazapyr 4 SL Herbicide
Imazapyr 4 SL Herbicide is a non-selective pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicide used to control most annual and perennial grasses, broadleaf weeds, vines, and trees in various sites, including aquatic areas. Its soil sterilizer feature allows it to be used in pastures and rangelands to ensure nothing grows along fence lines.
09/29/25
Imazapyr 4 SL Herbicide, manufactured by Alligare, is an effective non-selective bare-ground herbicide that controls various types of weeds and plants in their pre-emergent and post-emergent stages.
This broad-spectrum herbicide penetrates the foliage and travels through the plant to the roots. It is mixed with water and a surfactant to provide long-lasting results for up to 12 months. This pre-emergent and post-emergent combination herbicide starts to kill weeds and vines immediately upon contact, offering fast weed elimination results with a minimum amount of product.
Imazapyr 4 SL Herbicide successfully integrates the active ingredient imazapyr 52.6%, which guarantees long-term control by sterilizing the soil sprayed over for up to 1 year. After several weeks, unwanted vegetation, such as vines or brush in industrial and commercial areas, is completely knocked down.
Tools Needed
To apply Imazapyr 4 SL Herbicide, a hose-end sprayer, handheld pump sprayer, backpack sprayer, or skid sprayer is needed. We recommend using a handheld pump or backpack sprayer for spot treatments.
When this product is a post-emergent spray, it would be best to use a surfactant. Only use a surfactant labeled for the specific use site. When using it for conifer release treatments, refer to the conifer release section of this label.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine how much Imazapyr 4 SL Herbicide you will need by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. To do this, measure the treatment areas' length and width in feet, then multiply them together (length X width = square footage). For spot treatments or direct foliar sprays, Imazapyr 4 SL can be mixed at a rate of 1 1/3 oz. (1% concentration) to 6 2/3 oz (5% concentration) fl. oz. plus 1/3 oz. of a non-ionic surfactant in 1 gallon of water to treat 1,000 sq. ft. Depending on the aquatic weed and site, use 1-3 pints of product per acre. Do not exceed the maximum label rate of 3 pints per acre per year. Refer to the label for specific rates and application site restrictions.
- Step 2: Fill your sprayer halfway with water and add the correct amount of Imazapyr 4 SL to the spray tank. Fill the sprayer with the other half of the water and shake the spray tank so the solution is well-mixed. Lastly, add the appropriate amount of surfactant and shake until thoroughly mixed.
- Step 3: Apply the Imazapyr 4 SL Herbicide mixture evenly to areas with targeted vegetation until wet but not to the point of run-off. Use a fan spray nozzle setting for even coverage. Avoid direct spray contact with desired plant species, as injury may occur.
Where to Use
Although Imazapyr 4 SL Herbicide can be used on labeled grasses, broadleaf weeds, vines, brambles, hardwood brush, trees, and other undesirable vegetation in forestry sites, aquatic sites, grass pasture, rangeland, fence rows, maintenance of wildlife openings, and industrial non-cropland areas including railroad, utility, pipeline rights-of-way, utility plant sites, petroleum tank farms, pumping installations, storage areas, building perimeters, irrigation and non-irrigation ditch banks, roads, transmission lines, and industrial bare ground areas.
This product can be applied to emerging and floating aquatic vegetation in and around standing and flowing water, including estuarine and marine sites. Applications may be made to control undesirable wetland, riparian, and terrestrial vegetation growing in or around surface water.
This product may be used on emerging labeled weeds on listed aquatic sites but will not control submerged aquatic vegetation.
DO NOT apply to lawns, Christmas trees, food, or feed crops.
When to Use
Imazapyr 4 SL Herbicide can be used any time unwanted label-listed plants and other types of vegetation need to be removed. It is ideal to use it to eliminate annual and perennial grasses and broadleaf weeds.
Applications should be made during calm weather to prevent the product from drifting to non-targeted areas. Imazapyr 4 SL can be applied within 2 weeks after mowing or cutting to avoid accidental damage to desired vegetation.
Depending on the aquatic site, this product can only be applied to weeds after water has been drained and allowed to dry for 14 days before reintroducing water.
Safety Information
Imazapyr 4 SL Herbicide is safe to use around children and pets when applied according to product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.
Do not allow people or pets to enter treated areas until 48 hours have passed after application and the spray has completely dried.
There are no grazing restrictions following the application of this product. DO NOT cut forage grass for hay for seven days after application of this product.
Special Considerations
Imazapyr 4 SL Herbicide can be used to eliminate stumps. If areas are overtreated and a surfactant is not added, the risk of runoff onto other plants, causing damage, increases.
Do not side-trim desirable vegetation with this product unless severe injury and plant death can be tolerated.

Keith's Pro Tips | "When using Imazapyr 4 SL Herbicide, always mix in a surfactant to help the product stick to the plant. This prevents some of the run-off activity from occurring, causing it to spread to desired plants. Alligare 90 is a great surfactant and is recommended for use with Imazapyr 4 SL." |
Product Drawbacks | Imazapyr 4 SL Herbicide is a non-selective herbicide and is not suitable for use on lawns or turfs. For treating lawns and turfs of unwanted weeds, we recommend TopShot Weed Killer. |
