Advion Fire Ant Bait, manufactured by Syngenta, is a professional Indoxacarb granular insecticide bait offering rapid control over fire ants, pavement ants, and other ant species.

Ensures total control against ants in 24 to 72 hours for entire ant colony elimination by either contact or ingestion from foraging ants. Due to its ability to bring ant populations under control in less than 3 days and work at the direct moment of contact makes this product faster than any other ant baits on the market.

Advion Fire Ant Bait provides superior ant control with an alluring granular formulation in lawns, golf courses, and recreational areas.

Tools Needed

To apply Advion Fire Ant Bait you will need a granular spreader. A handheld or broadcast spreader should work fine for smaller applications. This product can be applied as both a broadcast treatment and to individual mounds.

How to Use

Spreading Ant Bait

  • Step 1: Determine how much Advion Fire Ant Bait to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. To do this, measure the length and width of the treatment area in feet then multiply them together (length x width = square footage). Apply 0.5 oz. of Advion Fire Ant Bait per 1,000 sq. ft. or 1.5 lbs. of product per acre. To treat individual ant mounds, apply 4 level tablespoons (0.5 oz) of product per mound.
  • Step 2: Load your granule spreader with Advion Fire Ant Bait. Calibrate and adjust equipment prior to application to ensure that the proper rate of product will be applied.
  • Step 3: Apply the Advion Fire Ant Bait uniformly on the treatment area. For broadcast treatment,  this may take numerous passthrough in order to get an even spread. When treating ant mounds, applying uniformly 3 to 4 feet around the mound. Do not apply to the tops of the mound or disturb the mound during application. Retreat after 12-16 weeks if needed.

Where to Use

Advion Fire Ant Bait is labeled to be used on lawns, landscaped areas, golf courses, commercial grounds, parks, other non-cropland areas such as airports, roadsides, cemeteries, commercial grounds, parks, school grounds, picnic grounds, athletic fields, and other recreational areas, as well as grounds surrounding poultry houses (excluding runs and ranges) or corrals and other animal holding areas.

When to Use

Advion Fire Ant Bait can be applied any time of the day but the best time to apply Advion Fire Ant Bait is either early in the morning or in the evenings. It is during these peak times that fire ants are usually foraging for food. This fire ant bait may be scattered as a broadcast treatment or used on individual mounds.

If it rains within 4 hours, Advion Fire Ant Bait would not work as well, so wait for the forecast to show no rain for a couple of days.

Safety Information

Advion Fire Ant Bait is safe to use when applied according to product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when applying this product.

Do not allow pets or people to contact treated areas.

Special Considerations

Advion Fire Ant Bait comes in two sizes, a 2-pound pail suitable for multiple uses in residential homes (that should last years) or a 25-pound pail, for commercial jobs.

Just so so for the money
I placed this around the perimeter of the yard and baited mounds as directed on the label. I would say that this worked about 75% of the time. I used to have really good luck when using this product in the past, but for some reason this last time using it I was somewhat disappointed. I went to the big box store and got another brand for killing fire ants that I use as my back up. More product for half the cost there.

The Best Fire Ant Bait
There is nothing else that matches this stuff. The granules that you put on the mound and add water toxify the mound and the ants move. The powder that smells like a gas leak dos the same thing. This bait, with a minimal application, kills the queen (since she eats first) and the whole colony dies afterward, taking about 3 days. It is incredible to watch.

For the love of all that is good though, READ the directions for applying this stuff. DO NOT broadcast spread it like that other reviewer mentions. That is how it gets banned (see the list of states you cannot buy it in). It is not meant to control fire ants and warns you specifically to NOT DO THIS. You apply this on mounds and it kills them. You need other products to control them or else you risk poisoning all the water in your area with runoff.

To apply this bait, you can shake it around the mound, or do the more satisfying option of kicking the mound and squeezing the container a couple of times to "puff" the bait out directly onto the ants. You do not need much. Then just wait for them all to die.

Best product I've found for fire ant elimination
This summer will be the third year I have used Advion Fire Ant Bait for the miserable little buggers. I have an allergic reaction to their bite so I am very serious about wiping them out whenever I discover a hill showing up in my yard (just over 2 acres.) I go thru about a pound and a half every summer and after applying sparingly around a hill the bait disappears within about 24 hours. I level the hill after a couple of days to check to make sure there is no activity. It is very seldom that I have to make a second application. Since I have neighbors that do nothing to control them on their property, it is an ongoing process to keep my property clear.

effective but pricey
I bought this product on the recommendation of a professional pest control technician. He was right - it is expensive but it worked. Worth every penny.

The best of the best
I would recommend this product.
I like this product because you sprinkle it like a salt. This product doesn't have smell. There product can be used with no limit. I don't like lid. I think it should be redesigned. We bought this product last year and we still using it. We have less than 0.25 acres.

Questions and Answers
Page
  1. Q:Last year it worked almost immediately, the last couple days it seems the mounds have populated not died?
    5/16/23
A:There a variety of factors that could influence this such as the time you applied could of been when the ant population was small resulting in faster control. Applications of Advion Fire Ant Bait Insecticide may be made at any time of the day, but are more effective when ants are actively foraging, usually when the soil surface temperature is above 60° F. If the treatment area is wet with dew, irrigation or rainfall could influence this products success. Do not disturb the mound. Do not apply to tops of mound. The use of other pesticides, fertilizers, and other biologically active materials at the time of this products application could also hinder ant control results.

  2. Q:What happens if you use to much fire ant bait?
    5/16/23
A:You waste money, and energy shaking the jug. We have 2.5 acres; too much for one(1) two pound container. So, generally, we use two(2) jugs, but I concentrate my application along the fence line, since the fire ants will forage something like 75 feet.

  3. Q:Do you need a special spreader to spread?
    2/27/23
A:No special spreader needed. For small areas I use a used plastic grated cheese container. For larger areas, a battery powered handheld broadcast spreader works great. The product is excellent and effective.

  4. Q:Sprinkle some Advion on mound, next morning majority of product was placed on side of mound? Does this mean, it won't work on my fire ants?
    8/23/22
A:There could be a multitude of reasons, but it could be the ants are not labeled to be treated, or recent rainfall and winds could of relocated the granules, or simply the ants were able to move the Advion Fire Ant Bait Insecticide because it was not applied uniformly and not enough product was used. However, Advion Fire Ant Bait Insecticide should not be applied on the top of mounds, but 3-4 feet evenly around the mound at the rate of 4 level tablespoons (0.5 oz) of Advion Fire Ant Bait per mound. Retreat after 12-16 weeks if needed.

  5. Q:Hi there. This is a great product. Why can’t you ship this to SC? I have ordered it from Amazon and other places many times and it was shipped okay. Maybe your business has to be licensed versus the product?
    3/24/22
A:Unfortunately, Advion Fire Ant Bait Insecticide cannot be sold or shipped to South Carolina. Each states department of agriculture regulates the use of certain chemicals within products, which may not be approved of in certain states.

  6. Q:After applying to the entire lawn do you need to wait before letting pets out on the lawn?
    6/28/21
A:According to several sources i have read, Advion is "safe for use around pets and children when applied as directed by the manufacturer." To better understand full application instructions, check out the portion of the Amazon listing just below the "Product Description" section, where there is a fourteen-page .PDF telling you everything you might wish to know about safe practices when using the product. Beyond the safety aspects, my experience with it is: it really works,, and with just a few days.

  7. Q:What is the use by date on Advion fire ant bait?
    3/27/21
A:I'm sure this is a "Best used by date' - but my experience, at least, is that this date is conservative. I have used this product well after the "Best used by date" (like a couple of years) - and it still seems to me to be very effective. Maybe the potency is down? I don't know. All I can say is that my experience is that is still works well after the "Best by" date.

  8. Q:What is the use by date?

  9. Q:Will this product adversely affect blueberries?
    4/26/20
  10. Q:Is this fire ant bait safe for wild birds and honey bees?
    3/21/20
A:Advion contains indoxocarb. This is one of the safest chemicals to use. As applied in a bait, the amount of active ingredient is tiny. Regarding bees, there is no reason for a bee to be collecting this on a lawn or ground. Birds would have no interest in it, if applied according to label. Indoxocarb is not very persistent in the environment. The only threat I might avoid is using it too close to water were it might enter a stream. In that case it could negatively impact aquatic invertebrates or possibly fish.
