Tordon RTU is a ready-to-use herbicide manufactured by DOW/CORTEVA, an applied as a cut surface treatment. Since it is ready-to-use, Tordon RTU does not need to be diluted or mixed with water or any other liquid.

It is formulated with the active ingredients picloram and 2,4-D, and can be used to control trees by using various methods. It can be applied by injection, frill or girdle treatment, and it is also effective as a stump remover.

Tordon RTU is effective against cedar, hickory, dogwood, and other hard to control trees. Tordon RTU is ideal for removing trees that are taking over forest lands and destroying other non-cropland sites.

Tools Needed

To apply Tordon RTU, tree trunk injector equipment is needed. When using the frill or girdle treatment, you will need an ax to cut and score the tree bark. To treat the cuts or treat a tree stump, a sprayer or a paint brush will be needed to apply the Tordon to the affected site.

How to Use

  • Step 1: There are multiple methods of applications for Tordon RTU. For tree injection, use 1 milliliter of Tordon RTU and inject it through the tree bark all the way around the tree at ground level every 2 to 3 inches between the edges of the injection sites.
  • Step 2: To kill tree stumps, spray or paint the solution on the cambium area of the stump next to the bark with Tordon RTU.
  • Step 3: For frill or girdle treatments you will make a single hack girdle or "frill" of cuts with an ax through the bark completely around the tree, making the cuts overlap. You can then spray the Tordon RTU or paint the injured areas, using enough to make the areas wet.

Used on intrusive tree and vines
I just applied it to an unwanted tree. It finally stopped raining. Now I have to wait... may have to reapply but it is easy to use and is very blue to mark application site.

Tordon RTU - Kill that stump once and for all!
Very effective stump killer. I use a small sprayer that you find in the travel section of Walmart cosmetics. (Fits nicely in a basket on my ATV!)I adjust the nozzle to generate a light yet relatively coarse spray. I spray the Tordon RTU on the outer edge of the freshly cut stump to wet the cambium layer. All done!

  1. Q:Does it kill African tulip?
    1/28/22
A:Tordon RTU Herbicide is not labeled to eliminate African tulip. Unfortunately, not many products will have African tulip mentioned on the label. Since African tulip is a type of tulip tree we recommend using MSM Turf Herbicide (Manor), which is labeled to eliminate tulip trees. https://www.solutionsstores.com/msm-turf-herbicide-manor

  2. Q:Can you get Gordon FYI in a clear color?
    10/18/21
A:To the best of my knowledge, it only comes in the deep blue color. Having a color is very helpful so you can monitor where this chemical has been placed. The Tordon RTU color does fade to nothing in about a week or two.

  3. Q:Will this kill linden trees?
    9/19/21
A:Linden trees are not specifically mentioned on the product label, but it is recommended to not apply Tordon RTU Specialty Herbicide within the root zone of desirable trees. Once applied this product can remain phytotoxic for a year or more if it gets into the soil leading to plant injury or possible death.

    8/29/21
A:We don't have bougainvillea in North Alabama, but I feel sure Tordon would "kill" Bougainvillea; you are wanting to "kill" it? consider selling the bougainvillea....someone might come dig it

    7/4/21
A:I would assume it works on Bamboo. I've never tried. It works, eventually, on Mimosas. A very invasive tree that grows like crazy down here. For a larger tree it takes a few applications.
