Tordon RTU Herbicide
Tordon RTU Herbicide
Tordon RTU is a ready-to-use herbicide manufactured by DOW/CORTEVA, an applied as a cut surface treatment. Since it is ready-to-use, Tordon RTU does not need to be diluted or mixed with water or any other liquid.
It is formulated with the active ingredients picloram and 2,4-D, and can be used to control trees by using various methods. It can be applied by injection, frill or girdle treatment, and it is also effective as a stump remover.
Tordon RTU is effective against cedar, hickory, dogwood, and other hard to control trees. Tordon RTU is ideal for removing trees that are taking over forest lands and destroying other non-cropland sites.
Tools Needed
To apply Tordon RTU, tree trunk injector equipment is needed. When using the frill or girdle treatment, you will need an ax to cut and score the tree bark. To treat the cuts or treat a tree stump, a sprayer or a paint brush will be needed to apply the Tordon to the affected site.
How to Use
- Step 1: There are multiple methods of applications for Tordon RTU. For tree injection, use 1 milliliter of Tordon RTU and inject it through the tree bark all the way around the tree at ground level every 2 to 3 inches between the edges of the injection sites.
- Step 2: To kill tree stumps, spray or paint the solution on the cambium area of the stump next to the bark with Tordon RTU.
- Step 3: For frill or girdle treatments you will make a single hack girdle or "frill" of cuts with an ax through the bark completely around the tree, making the cuts overlap. You can then spray the Tordon RTU or paint the injured areas, using enough to make the areas wet.
Where to Use
Tordon RTU can be applied to various types of trees found in non-cropland areas, forest sites, fence lines, roadsides, and rights-of-way.
This product should not be applied on residential or commercial lawns or near ornamental trees and shrubs.
Tordon RTU can be applied anytime an unwanted tree or tree stump needs to be removed from specific areas. Treatment applications can be made at any time during the year, but do not treat maple trees during spring sap flow.
Safety Information
Tordon RTU is safe to use when applied according to label directions. Tordon RTU is not recommended for use on residential or commercial lawns. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when cutting or injecting trees and applying Tordon RTU.
Special Considerations

Tordon RTU can be applied in various ways, always read the product label for specific directions on each application method for the best results. Do not apply within the root zone of desired trees as they may be affected by through root uptake by movement into the topsoil or by excretion of the product from nearby treated trees.

Q:I am fighting the long fight against oriental bittersweet. I'm in central Massachusetts. I think I'm winning, time will tell. I have several areas with large patches of new growth bittersweet, cutting through dozens of small plant and painting the ends with Tordon is a huge task. Can Tordon be sprayed onto the bittersweet? This assumes I'll be very careful, of course. Spraying would save me many hours, days even.6/12/22

Q:Is Tordon effective just by applying it to the bark without cutting it?5/9/22A:No, you have to get it into the root system of the tree. The best way to do this is to either drill holes into the tree and fill them with tordon, cut into the tree several times and apply tordon or you can try mixing tordon with a few gallons of water and throwing this around the base of the tree, but this may take several efforts and may spread the poison around the place when it rains more. The most effective way to use tordon is to cut the tree down and put it on the fresh stump.

Q:Will this work on large trees like 25-30 feet tall? It says to inject every 2-3 inches. How deep. Its large maple trees maybe 1.5-2 feet radius. Can it be done and how? Thanks3/15/22A:Gurdled the tree after using drilled holes; leaves changing and tree has ants running all over the gurdled part where Tordon was also applied carefully with rubber gloves.

Q:Can I just drill a hole at the base of the tree and pour Tordon into the hole?3/9/22A:The best form of treatment you are possibly referring to is tree injection treatment, you will need to use 1 milliliter of undiluted Tordon RTU solution through the bark completely around the tree trunk at intervals of 2 to 3 inches between edges of the injector wounds. Make injections near ground level when using the tree injector or 2 to 4 feet above the ground when using a Hypohatchet Injector or similar device. Do not apply Tordon RTU within the root zone of desirable trees unless such injury can be tolerated. For more specifics, refer to page 3 of the product label.

Q:Does it kill African tulip?1/28/22A:Tordon RTU Herbicide is not labeled to eliminate African tulip. Unfortunately, not many products will have African tulip mentioned on the label. Since African tulip is a type of tulip tree we recommend using MSM Turf Herbicide (Manor), which is labeled to eliminate tulip trees. https://www.solutionsstores.com/msm-turf-herbicide-manor
