Safari 20SG Insecticide Dinotefuran, manufactured by Valent Professional Products, is a granular systemic insecticide that can be applied in a variety of ways to absorb into treated plants to fight against pest like leafhoppers and spotted lanternfly.

This effective insecticide has multiple application methods to treat various pests as a foliar spray, a broadcast spray, a soil drench, soil injection and via chemigation. Features an excellent water solubility and fast uptake by plants than other insecticides on the market, making it an economical product.

Safari 20SG Insecticide Dinotefuran is easy to use and offers long-lasting control of 90 days on treated areas against pests.

Tools Needed

Safari 20SG Insecticide Dinotefuran can be applied with air assisted (air blast) tree and vine sprayers, backpack sprayer, handheld pump sprayer, or hose-end sprayer.

This product is compatible with most commonly used pesticides, crop oils, adjuvants, and nutritional sprays.

How to Use

  • Step 1: Determine how much Safari 20SG Insecticide Dinotefuran to use by measuring the square footage of the treatment area. To do this, measure the length and width of the treatment area in feet then multiply them together (length X width = square footage). For acreage, take the square footage and divide it by one acre (square footage / 43,560 sq. ft. = acres). For labeled cucurbits, fruiting vegetables, and head and stem vegetables apply 3.5 to 7.0 oz of Safari 20SG Insecticide Dinotefuran per 100 gallons of water or 7 to 14 oz. of product per acre. Labeled leafy vegetables will use the rate of 3.5 to 5.5 oz per 100 gallons of water. Foliar or broadcast applications on outdoor/indoor ornamentals will use 4 to 8 oz of product per 100 gallons of water. For example, if you were treating aphids on ornamentals you would need to mix 0.2 to 0.4 oz. per gallon of water to cover 1,000 sq. ft. If you have 2,500 sq. ft. to treat, you would need to mix 0.5 to 1.0 fl. oz. in 2.5 gallons of water.
  • Step 2: Fill your sprayer halfway with water and then add the measured amount of Safari 20SG Insecticide Dinotefuran. Allow one to two minutes for the product to dissolve and then fill the sprayer with the remaining amount of water. Screw on the lid and thoroughly agitate your sprayer.
  • Step 3: Apply the product evenly in the desired areas, making sure to follow label directions to allow the product enough water to absorb into the plants and their root systems.

Where to Use

Safari 20SG Insecticide Dinotefuran can be used to treat plants such as in nurseries, greenhouses, interior plantscapes, lath and shadehouses, outdoor landscapes (commercial, industrial, recreational, and residential), tree plantations, reforestation nurseries, and forests.

When to Use

Safari 20SG Insecticide Dinotefuran should be used any time plant destroying pests become a problem or before an infestation occurs as a preventative measure.

Safety Information

Safari 20SG Insecticide Dinotefuran is safe to use around children and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.

Keep children and pets off treated areas until spray has dried.

Special Considerations

Safari 20SG Insecticide Dinotefuran is a systemic insecticide which means it needs to be absorbed into the plant in order for it to be effective. Due to this, it may take longer for the product to begin affecting pests when applied to trees or woody plants, and it can take longer for the plant to circulate the product around itself.

Easy to use
I’m using this to protect old growth eastern hemlocks from HWA. The relatively quick uptake reported for the product made it my choice for older and/or stressed trees. The granules measure easily with minimal dust and dissolve quickly, and application is straightforward. So far so good!

This will be the 3rd year I have applied this to my large (27" DBH) ash trees and they are the only ash trees in the neighborhood the look alive and well except for the few that have been treated by an arborist using injection. I haven't applied the product I bought from you as I am waiting for the reproductive parts of the ash tree to fall off so bees and not using the tree. J.P.

Saved my Ash trees!!!
This is a lifesaver against the Emerald Ash Borer to preserve my remaining Ash trees.
I treated early fall 2022 & at leaf-out this spring. Some branches I thought were dead have rebounded. I've not encountered Lanternflies but absolutely great against borers.
I used the Drench Treatment, pouring 360° around base of tree ~3 ft. up.

Questions and Answers
  1. Q:Will this work on a heavy infestation of magnolia scale?
    4/12/24
A:Safari 20SG will not control magnolia scale. We recommend using Dominion 2L Insecticide which will control soft scales, which is what magnolia scales are considered. https://www.solutionsstores.com/dominion-2l-insecticide

  2. Q:Thanks for the answer on woolly on hemlocks, Amanda. Mine are not an ornamental side and are far too large to spray the branches/needles. Are other options or solutions (but same active ingredient) effective? Thank you again.
    3/20/24
A:Your best bet would be to use a air assisted air blast tree and vine sprayer or a hose-end sprayer like the Solutions Hose End Sprayer to reach tall heights of the hemlock tree with Safari. Unfortunately, not many insecticide labels will specifically mention hemlock trees on their label and may use more general terms such as ornamental tree or just tree. https://www.solutionsstores.com/solutions-hose-end-sprayer

  3. Q:Will this help against woolly adelgid on hemlock trees? If so, does a root soak work? How would you calculate amount of product for a root soak? Thank you!
    3/19/24
A:Yes, Safari 20SG will kill Hemlock Woolly Adelgids on ornamental trees like hemlocks. No root soaks, but you will need to perform a foliar spray or if your tree is in a container then a soil media drench. These rates and instructions can be found on page 8-10, and 15 of the label.

  4. Q:Is the 2% formulation sufficient to treat camellias to kill peony and other scale insects?
    3/6/24
A:It doesnt state specific foliage types, but it does state flowering plants on the label, which is what peonies and camellias are considered. And yes, it will kill scale insects on these plants. Per the label it does recommend to confirm plant safety by spraying a small area of the plant, before treating the entire foliage for possible phytotoxic effects.

  6. Q:Will Safari kill ants on an Ash tree?
    8/26/22
A:Safari 20SG Insecticide Dinotefuran will not kill ants. We recommend you check out our ant control guides to properly identify the ants infesting your tree then click on the guide for recommended products and tips for that pest. You may also reach out to through phone, email, or visit one of your store locations with either a picture or the ant itself in a sealable plastic container. By doing so, we can properly identify the ant and suggest the appropriate control plan and products to get rid of that ant. https://www.solutionsstores.com/ant-control

  7. Q:Does this kill eastern lubbers?
    6/1/22
A:If you are referring to the Eastern lubber grasshopper, then Safari 20SG Insecticide Dinotefuran is not labeled for these pests. Since these pests are grasshoppers, we recommend reading our Grasshopper Control guide for appropriate product recommendations and control methods. https://www.solutionsstores.com/how-to-get-rid-of-grasshoppers

  9. Q:Is October too late to apply Dinotefuran for spotted lantern flies seen on a silver maple tree?
    9/30/21
A:No, it is not too late to treat for Spotted Laneternfly. Right now Spotted Lanternflies are in their adult, egg-laying stage. Treating now will have you targeting the adults. For total control, keep an eye out for their egg casing, which look like smears of light-colored mud. If you can destroy the egg sacs, then you will not need to re-treat in the spring when the eggs hatch.
