Martin's Nutgrass Eliminator, manufactured by CSI, is an excellent selective herbicide that eliminates the toughest emerged broadleaf weeds, sedges, and nutgrasses in lawns and other landscaped areas without harming desirable ornamental foliage.

This product contains the active ingredient halosulfuron 5.0%, the same ingredient used in sedgehammer, which works to safely interfere with the enzyme of the undesired weed causing cell division to cease and prevent the root and shoot growth of unwanted weed.

Martin's Nutgrass Eliminator is an easy to use herbicide that often works in one application.

Tools Needed

You will need to use a backpack sprayer, handheld pump sprayer, shielded sprayer, boom-less ground application equipment, or handheld technology application equipment.

Do not use any type of irrigation system, apply this product by air, or use ground boom equipment.

How to Use

Spraying Turf

  • Step 1: Determine how much Martin's Nutgrass Eliminator packets to use by calculating the square footage of the treatment site. To find this, measure the length and width of the treatment site in feet and multiply (length X width = square footage). The general application rate is is 0.5 oz. (1 pouch) of Martin's Nutgrass Eliminator per gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft. For horsetail infestations, apply 1 oz. (2 pouches) of product per gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft.
  • Step 2: Fill your selected sprayer halfway with the required amount of water, add the contents of the required amount of Martin's Nutgrass Eliminator packets, and fill the rest of the way with the remaining half of water. Shake the sprayer until product contents are completely dispersed.
  • Step 3: Spray the top and bottom of weed leaves until wet, but not to the point of run-off or overlap. When spraying weeds near desired plants ensure that spray around the plant and not over the top of desired flowers, ornamentals, vegetables, shrubs, or trees. A second retreatment may be needed when 6 to 10 weeks have passed after first application.

Where to Use

Martin's Nutgrass Eliminator can be used on well-established, seeded, sodded, or sprigged cool-seasoned and warm-seasoned turfgrass in commercial and residential lawns, around woody ornamentals in landscaped areas, fallow areas, fence rows, fuel storage areas, lumberyards, tank farms, right of ways, roadsides, and other non-crop sites (including airports, campgrounds, cemeteries, fairgrounds, public recreation areas, race tracks, residential property, school grounds, sport fields, and tennis courts).

This product can also be applied over labeled warm-seasoned grasses like St. Augustinegrass, Bermudagrass, and Bahiagrass, and cool-seasoned grass like Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, and Perennial Ryegrass.

Do not apply this product to golf course putting greens.

When to Use

Use Martin's Nutgrass Eliminator when turfgrass has not been mowed 2 days before application or 2 days after application. Allow turfgrass to have established root system and uniform stand before application, which is typically in spring and summer for warm-seasoned grass and fall and early spring for cool-seasoned grass.

Apply on warm days when rainfall is not predicted for 4 hours after application and when turfgrass or nutsedge is not under stress as turf injury and poor nutsedge control may result.

Safety Information

Martin's Nutgrass Eliminator is safe to use around children or pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing or applying this product.

Do not enter or allow worker entry into treated areas during the restricted-entry interval of 12 hours.

Do not allow people or pets into treated areas until the product has dried completely.

Special Considerations

Annual and perennial herbaceous ornamentals, including color plants, may be injured when transplanted into landscaped areas treated with Martin's Nutgrass Eliminator.

To help avoid overapplication in spot and broadcast treatments, we recommend you use a marking dye like Vision Blue or Vision Pro Max. These products are temporarily colorants used to indicated where you have sprayed. When mixed into your spray solution, your application will leave turf a deep blue color, reminding you where you have sprayed so you know not to apply there again.
