Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide
Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide
Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide, manufactured by PBI Gordon, is a post-emergent selective herbicide meant to control annual and perennial grassy weeds that show up on landscape beds. Ornamec 170 works systemically to control unwanted grasses in areas with ornamental plants, shrubs, trees, flowers and groundcover.
Ornamec 170 can be safely applied "over-the-top" without injuring desired plants. Ornamec works fast and will hinder the growth of grassy weeds in as quick as 48 hours. If you are looking for grassy weed control, Ornamec provides great value.
Tools Needed
To use Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide, you will need to mix the product into a sprayer of your choosing such as a backpack, hose-end or hand-pump sprayer. For the average job, a hand-pump gallon sprayer works best.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine how much Ornamec 170 you need for your application by first calculating the square footage of your yard. To do this, you will need to measure and multiply the area length times the width (length x width=square footage). The application rates for Ornamec 170 vary depending on the weed being treated, where you are treating and whether you are conducting a broadcast treatment or spot treatment. For example, Broadcast treatments for Ornamentals, Trees, Shrubs and Groundcovers use 6 to 9 fl. oz. per gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft. Spot treatments for Bermudagrass on Tall Fescue Turf should be applied at a rate of 2 fl. oz. per gallon of water per 1,000 sq. ft.
- Step 2: Fill your sprayer tank halfway with the appropriate amount of water. Add the correct measured amount of Ornamec 170 based on your calculations and then add the remaining half of water. Agitate well in the sprayer to ensure it's well mixed.
- Step 3: Broadcast spray or spot treat based on the severity of your grassy weed problem, making sure to get even coverage via fan spray setting.
- Step 3: Reapply the product in 14 to 21 days intervals if weeds are still persisting and repeat as needed for full control all season long.
Where to Use
Ornamec 170 can be used to control grass weeds in many newly transplanted and established ornamentals, trees, shrubs and groundcovers.
When to Use
Apply Ornamec 170 to actively growing grass weeds before they exceed the recommended growth stages. Make applications on warm, calm days when wind speeds are low to minimize drift and when rain is not in the immediate forecast.
Do not apply this product if rainfall is expected within 1 hour of application.
Safety Information
Ornamec 170 is safe for pets and children when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.
Keep children and pets out of treated areas until the spray has completely dried.
Special Considerations
Do not apply Ornamec 170 Grass Herbicide to grasses that are stressed due to moisture, temperature, low soil fertility or mechanical/chemical injury. Always check the label before purchasing to make sure that the product is listed to address your specific weed problem and to check if it is safe to use on your landscape.

Q:I I LIVE IN PHOENIX,AZ. IS IT BETTER I LIVE IN PHOENIX,AZ. IS IT BETTER TO WAIT TILL SPRING, WHEN IT STARTS ACTIVLY REGROWING?10/20/21A:I apply the product twice a year to keep the Bermuda grass from growing, so I don’t think it matters much when you apply the product. It works really well. I live in Southern California, but I’d say the climate doesn’t really come into play much. It works.

Q:if instruction says 'apply at 65-85 degrees'; does it mean only during lawn application? Or does it mean, it should dry at 65-85 degree temperature? Thanks8/27/21A:Have not had the problem, but interpret this to mean that if product is fully dry when temperatures go above 85 degrees, there should be no problem. I suspect the concern is that if the product rises above 85 degrees it may evaporate. I’m not a chemist, but the chemical mix seems to have a designated range necessary to dry on the plant. There might be other explanations based on plant physical attributes which occur at these temperature ranges. Unfortunately, I am not a botanist either.

Q:My grass is already brown from the restriction of water. But I can see the Bermuda grass growing strong. Is it still good to put this item down where my Kentucky blue grass is trying to grow?7/16/21A:Label does NOT reference Kentucky Blue Grass, recommend testing a small area first. This does kill Bermuda grass, and most likely would also kill Kentucky Blue Grass.

Q:Will it kill broadleaf blooming natives? The burmuda is invading and I’m having a hard time keeping it pulled out .6/27/21A:It's supposed to, but the last time I bought Ornamec, I was a little disappointed. I had to apply multiple applications and it did brown the edges of some of my broadleaf plants. Don't expect RoundUp style results as even the bottle says it may take weeks before you can see the grass turn brown
