How to Get Rid of Zika Spreading Mosquitoes: 3 Step Solution

Getting rid of mosquitoes and the threat of Zika is especially important during the warmer seasons when mosquito activity is at the highest. A good mosquito control program includes a combination of sanitation measures, removing standing water and applying liquid insecticide treatment either monthly or bi-monthly. Below you will find out recommended control plan designed to significantly reduce mosquito activity and will allow you to enjoy your outdoor areas without constant mosquito bites. While it, unfortunately, isn’t realistic to expect 100% permanent control of all mosquitoes because of their habits and travel, the mosquito population can be reduced to a manageable level through the use of these steps.

Step 1: Eliminate areas with standing water. Inspect the perimeter of your home and yard and you will likely find a number of different water sources. Mosquitoes love to hang around slow-moving or stagnant water because these are prime places where the female mosquitoes can lay eggs and where larvae develop. In all places where it is possible, water should be emptied frequently, especially after rainfall. Some examples include flower pots, pet dishes, rain gutters, bird baths, Trees and bushes should be kept pruned and grass should be kept short to limit resting areas for adult mosquitoes.

Step 2: In places where it will be tough or impossible to remove stagnant water, it would be wise to use a larvicide which will prevent mosquito eggs and larvae from developing into pesky blood-sucking adults. Solutions Pest & Lawn carries larvicides which come in different formulations. You can use mosquito dunks, water soluble packets or granules. We recommend QuikStrike Scatter Bait. Which larvicide you choose will be based on the areas you are treating so it is important to read the product label prior to purchasing the product.

Step 3: Use one of our quality insecticide sprays to treat your yard on a monthly basis. Mix the formula in a container of your choosing (Solution has a variety of sprayers as well as foggers). Take note of the times where mosquito activity is the highest and spray then. Spread the application (We suggest Flex 10-10 or CSI 30-30) even on shrubbery and trees as wall as overhangs around your home. Spraying on the underside of leaves on trees and bushes is also an overlooked area that should be treated since mosquitoes like to hide on the undersides. The addition of the insect growth regulator like Pivot 10 can also reduce how often you need to treat your yard due to the reproduction cycle of the surrounding mosquitoes will have been blocked.
