Weed & Feedweed & feed

Every homeowner wants a healthy, green and vibrant lawn to show off to the neighborhood. However, mowing and occasional watering the grass and letting the sun do the rest of the work is usually not enough to ensure you maintain high-quality turf and rich soil for your yard to thrive and fight off weeds. While there are designated products to take care of weeds directly like herbicides and other focused products like fertilizer which give your lawn the proper nutrition, there are also convenient products which combine the two in order to save time and essentially kill two birds with one stone: weed and feed.

“Weed & feed” is the nickname given for a segment of lawn maintenance products designed to both strengthen existing grass and kill off invasive weeds in one single application. Weed & Feed products help to improve the ability of your lawn turf to absorb water and food, and adds essential nutrients which promote healthy growth. As a result, your healthy lawn will prevent weeds from taking over and which will reduce your need to apply the product regularly over time.

At Solutions Pest and Lawn, we carry the best weed & feed products available on the market and along with that we offer expert advice on how to apply these products and the best practices and tips to ensure the best possible implementation.

Ideal Times To Apply Weed & Feed

The best time to apply weed & feed products are when weeds are actively growing on your lawn, usually around the spring and summertime. Applying these type of products in the winter will be ineffective. It is also best to spread weed & feed on grass that has been dampened or wet whether through watering or just after rain so that the granules stick better to the parts of the weeds that are leafy.

We also recommend that when applying weed and feed to make sure that you apply it at a time when there is no rain to be expected at least within 48 hours. We also discourage you from watering your lawn during the same period of time. This is so time can be allowed for the herbicide to absorb into the leaves whereas if the lawn is wet or it rains, the weed and feed will wash the granules off the leaves. Do not re-apply if this does happen because you could risk over-feeding your lawn, leading it to be scorched.

How to Apply Weed & Feed To Your Lawn

There are a few important details to keep in mind when applying weed & feed to your yard. Note that these tips are not intended to replace manufacturer's instructions found on labels, though you will find most manufacturers will recommend some of the same tips we give.

Step 1: Prep your lawn prior to laying out weed and feed. This can be achieve by making sure your lawn is at a normal height (not too tall, not too short) – approximately 3-5 inches is good. Also water your lawn a bit to make sure the soil is moist.

Step 2: Using a broadcast spreader, spread the weed and feed uniformly across the lawn for best results. We recommend making two passes at half application strength rather than trying to spread at full strength in one pass. Do your best to avoid overspreading or getting granules on your ornamentals as it will kill most broadleaf plants. If you must spread near a garden, use a drop spreader.

Step 3: We recommend applying weed & feed no more than twice per year. Over-application can result in run off that is harmful to the local environment, such as nearby rivers, bays, or lakes/ponds. The feed portion of the chemical is actually more dangerous in these areas as it can encourage algae blooms which choke out fish and native plants.
