Tenacity Herbicide is a systemic pre-emergent and post-emergent weed killer. With mesotrione 40% as its active ingredient, Tenacity Herbicide is known for its selective contact and residual control of weeds in turfgrasses.

When used as a pre-emergent, Tenacity works by being absorbed by weeds as they emerge from the soil. When used as a post-emergent, Tenacity will be absorbed by the targeted weed through foliar contact.

Tenacity Herbicide can also provide excellent control of crabgrass and many other weeds in residential yards. This is important because MSMA, our go-to recommendation for crabgrass control, has been banned by the EPA for homeowners or residential use.

Tools Needed

Tenacity Herbicide can be applied with a pressurized hydraulic sprayer, high-volume handgun spray, handheld pump sprayer, or backpack sprayer.

How to Use

Spraying Tenacity pre-emergent to yard

  • Step 1: First, you will need to determine the square footage of the target area in order to calculate how much Tenacity you will need. You can do this by multiplying the length and width of your area (length x width = square footage). You will also need to determine the species of turf the weed is present on prior to application as this will effect the application rate. For large areas, the typical application rate is between 4-8 fluid ounces per 30 gallons of water per acre. For smaller areas and spot treatments, a half teaspoon of Tenacity in 1 gallon of water will treat 1,000 square feet. For example, if your area is 2,000 sq. ft., you will need to mix one teaspoon of Tenacity with 2 gallons of water.
  • Step 2: Fill your sprayer with half the amount of water, add measured amount of Tenacity Herbicide, then pour in remaining half of water. Close the spray tank lid and shake until the product has fully dissolved and throughly has been mixed.
  • Step 3: Once your solution is complete, apply Tenacity Herbicide selectively to the target weed, being sure not to over-apply to the point of runoff. Use a fan-spray nozzle setting for even coverage. Repeat application in 2-3 weeks for best results.

Where to Use

Applying Tenacity Herbicide to grass

Tenacity Herbicide is used for weed control in turfgrasses in residential and commercial sites, golf courses (excluding putting greens with a 5 foot buffer), sod farms, athletic fields, parks, cemeteries, airports, and lawns.

When to Use

Use Tenacity during the growing season when unwanted weeds are on the property. Tenacity pre-emergent applications must be done in the fall and early spring. For post-emergent applications, it is best to apply Tenacity herbicide to young, actively growing weeds and may require a second application after 2 to 3 weeks.

Safety Information

Before applying this product, make sure to put on the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) for safety - gloves, goggles, long-sleeved clothing, and a face mask. Tenacity Herbicide is safe for pets and kids when used according to the Tenacity Herbicide label. Pets and children should not be present during treatment and should remain out of the treated areas until they have completely dried.

Special Considerations

Bentgrass, Poa annua, kikuyu grass, zoysiagrass, seashore paspalum, and bermudagrass are sensitive to Tenacity mesotrione herbicide applications. Avoid spraying these turf types unless control can be tolerated. Avoid overspray onto ornamental plants or flower beds and gardens. Roses and daylilies are sensitive plant species.

A surfactant is recommended with Tenacity to improve weed control and provide a better stick to the leaf surface of the weeds.

Great product
Tenacity is a great product that kills what other herbicides do not. I had a major bent grass issue that nothing else worked on and Tenacity killed it with 2 applications. Works great on crab & quack grass also.

A Powerful Product
The product is excellent. I would recommend you add a surfactant (it will help it adhere to the leaves of the weeds), and ordinary food colouring as a dye so you can see where you've sprayed. Mixing this all up is a mess. but you'll be glad you did because over-spraying your lawn will damage your grass.

It has to be dry and windless to apply for best results, and an expectation of a couple of dry days is best. It says you can spray if you have several rain-free hours ahead, but my guess, for people that say it didn't work, is that they had rain or a heavy dew right after they sprayed. Don't spray again for at least 2 weeks - you may not have to spray again until the fall. Wear grease monkey or dish-washing gloves and an N95 mask: this stuff is toxic, and don't let pets or children on it for at least 24 hours (regardless of what they say). Don't let spray get on trees or anywhere near a vegetable garden.

It looks like nothing is happening, then in about 10 days all your weeds will start to turn white, and die. If you spray again too soon you WILL kill your grass. For tough weeds like yellow spurge, black medic, crabgrass you may have to pull out the weed after it dies (some of these have underground rhizomes that won't be affected by the spray). Then I spot-spray these about 2.5 weeks later. Spray as soon as you can in the spring mid to late April in zone 5, then as late in the fall as you can - just before frost. You will have the fewest weeds in your neighbourhood.

This is my first year using tenacity, I would recommend it mostly just for crabgrass, it did an outstanding job on my crabgrass, it also killed other weeds such as dandelions, clover and thistles in my yard, but because of the cost of tenacity I usually just use it on the crabgrass. There are other cheaper herbicides out there that can kill all the other weeds which helps keep the overall cost down.

  1. Q:Can you use this product in conjunction with overseeding
    3/11/24
A:Tenacity can be used for weed control prior to or during seeding of certain turfgrasses during turf renovations.

  2. Q:How long before a rain can apply?… forecasted 1.35 inches in next 12hrs but doesn’t start for another 5hrs
    2/27/24
A:I wouldnt apply it now if you have rain in 5 hrs. If its completely dry it should be fine but it may reduce efficacy and with that much rain you might get some runoff to non target areas.

  3. Q:Does Tenacity work on Wild Onion or Wild Garlic??
    2/20/24
A:Tenacity Herbicide will not control wild onion or wild garlic. We recommend using Fahrenheit Herbicide, which will control wild onion and wild garlic. https://www.solutionsstores.com/fahrenheit-herbicide

  4. Q:Can I use a stronger application rate on dormant centipede grass?
    1/29/24
A:I am very sorry but I do not have extensive experience with centipede grass, so I rather not make a recommendation other than: being dormant makes it unable to absorb the chemical, so you may want to wait until the centipede is starting to show.
