Everything you need to complete the job for an entire house and a retreat in 10 to 14 days.

Our bed bug kit is designed to provide complete control of bed bugs in the home according to our proven Solutions 5 Step Bed Bug Control Process. Check out our complete guide to controlling Bed Bugs below where we break down in detail our 5 Step Guide to Effective Bed Bug Control which utilizes all the products in our bed bug kit.

Step 1: End the Biting and Prepare your room(s) for bed bug treatment.

Getting rid of bed bugs may be a simple and straightforward task but it involves a lot of work and attention to detail. Inspecting and treating all of the hiding places and hot spots where bed bugs like to reside is the key to getting rid of bed bugs.

Bed bugs are excellent hiders so the first thing that must be done is to stop the biting and take out the bed bugs you visibly see.

While inspecting use Pyrid Aerosol to treat the live bed bugs you see, this will help you kill them before causing any breakdown of the room. You can also you a good vacuum and steamer to remove in sensitive areas. Please refer to our Bed Bug info graphic for areas to inspect for bed bugs.

Next, you will want to strip off the bedsheets and pillowcases from your bed leaving just a bare mattress. Toss the bedding into a garbage bag and at this point, you can either discard the bedding or dump the bedding straight into the washer and dryer to sterilize them.

Put the washer on hot water and do a cycle before moving the materials to the dryer and putting it on high heat to kill the bed bugs. Do the same to any clothing and other fabric materials you suspect have bed bugs.

Tip: Nuvan Prostrips are a good tool for items that cannot be washed and dried, you will have to use a container to place them in and seal up for a couple of days.

While your bedding and clothing is being washed, we recommend vacuuming the floor and infested areas to remove any visible bed bugs, shells, eggs and casings paying close attention the fold and crevices of your mattresses, box springs, and the perimeter edges of carpeting by walls.

Afterward, make sure dispose of the vacuum bag in a sealed trash bag and remove for the house or apartment.

Complete removal of all bed bugs is not possible, with the size of the nymphs, but this is a good start.

You will want to take all furniture in consideration, dressers, nightstands, headboards all need to be inspected and if visible signs of bed bugs exist treat with aerosol spray.

Remember behind and underneath, bed bugs will not be out in the open they are in tight spaces and cracks and crevices. Look under drawers, behind headboards. Check out our Infographic for exact locations.

Step 2: Treat Harborage Areas With Bed Bug Kit Chemicals

Once the infested rooms have been prepped and sensitive products have been quarantined and sterilized, it’s time to move onto chemical treatment.

The key to successful bed bug control is to thoroughly treat all of the cracks and crevices where bed bugs hide. It is important to be thorough and think like a bed bug.

Bed bugs are not great travelers and prefer to stay where a food source is located (people), this is usually bedrooms and living areas. We have a helpful diagram which you can refer to when treating your home. You will want to treat all of these zones with crack and crevice application.

Solutions Pest & Lawn recommends splitting the treatment areas into primary and secondary areas of treatment.

Primary areas:

  • mattress
  • box spring
  • bed frame
  • headboard
  • luggage racks

Secondary areas:

  • nightstands
  • Carpeting
  • Upholstered furniture
  • luggage areas
  • Baseboards
  • Sconces
  • electrical areas
  • wall decor or curtains

We recommend using the Flex 10-10 which came in the bed bug kit and applying it with Gentrol IGR Aerosol. Apply the mixture in a hand pump sprayer and treat the areas listed above. Recommended rate is 6 ounces per gallon of water.

Step 3: Dust Infested Areas

Bed bugs are a tricky insect to get rid of and that is why it’s important to have a multi-pronged control approach that uses different methods of control.

That’s why Solutions Pest & Lawn experts recommend using dust products as well as spray insecticides when treating for bed bugs and is also why we added D-Fense dust to our bed bug kit.

Dust products last on surfaces for a long time, between 8 months to a year of even longer. This allows dust to continue killing bed bugs long after the initial application.

While dust don’t kill as quickly as liquid products, they have a long lasting effect, which is why we typically recommend dusting in addition to spraying.

Apply D-Fense dust in areas that are hard to reach or inaccessible by other products. D-fense dust should be applied under baseboards, on and inside the box spring itself, and for dusting in cracks and crevices where liquids can’t reach (for example in and behind picture frames, underneath furniture, cracks inside dresser drawers, etc). D-Fense dust can either be applied using its container tip or by using a hand duster (recommended).

We recommend light puffs of dust rather than squeezing out big piles of dust as it is more subtle and thus more likely for bed bugs to walk through.

Make sure to clean up any exposed dust, it is meant to be used in out of way places.

Step 4: Cover Your Mattress and Box Spring

Once the treatment of dusting and spraying is complete, we recommend using Pyrid Aerosol to spray.

Pyrid Aerosol for Bedbugs: Thoroughly inspect the area of suspected bed bug infestation and note potential harborage sites or actual infestations.

Remove and/or pick up clothing and other obstacles that may prevent thorough inspection or treatment. Remove and sanitize infested bedding (pillows and linens), clothing or other items.

Apply Pyrid Aerosol on mattresses as a spot treatment to mattress seams, edges, and tufts of bed only. Do not use Pyrid Aerosol directly on mattresses, pillows, bed linens or clothes. Do not saturate the mattress, and do not treat the entire surface area of the mattress. Allow mattress to dry thoroughly before replacing pillows and/or bed linens. Bed bugs may also harbor in areas of the room away from the bed.

Apply as a crack and crevice or spot application where evidence of bed bugs occurs. This includes bed frames, box springs, inside empty drawers and clothes closets, night stands and other furniture in the room, carpet edges, high and low wall moldings (such as floor molding or window casings), wall voids, behind wall hangings and mirrors, wallpaper edges and popcorn ceilings.

Remove all clothes and other articles from dressers or closets before application. Take bed apart. Treat joints and channels if hollow, such as square or round tubing, and see that interior framework is treated.

Apply as a surface application to carpeting, drapes, and flooring at the rate of 16 ounces per 500 ft². Allow all treated areas to dry thoroughly before use.

We highly recommend using encasements for your mattress and box spring.

Bed bug covers are great ways to prevent bed bug re-infestation and to kill and bed bug adults and eggs that were missed during treatment.

Bed bug covers act as a tomb for the bed bugs in the mattress, nothing can go in and nothing can come out so essentially any bed bug encased in the bed bug covers is trapped and will starve to death.

It will make much easier work if a retreatment is necessary because all seams and cracks are not accessible to bed bugs.

Place mattress and box spring encasements on all beds and box springs and leave in place for at least a year as bed bugs can live without taking a blood meal for up to 1 year though it will be best if the bed bug cover is the permanent cover for the bed for the duration of its life.

Step 5: Follow Up Treatments

It is important to follow up after 10 to 14 days and check the hot spots listed above for any sign of bed bugs. If activity is found a retreat is warranted and the previous steps should be performed again.

These follow up treatments allow you to both inspect to see how the bed bug activity has changed in all locations and to go over and treat areas you may have overlooked from the previous treatment.

Also, retreatments are important in that it can eliminate new bed bugs which may have hatched since the last application. Continue to check your progress until you no longer see any more bed bugs.

By using the bed bug kit in conjunction with these helpful steps, you will surely be successful in eliminating the bed bug infestation in your home. Optional: As an extra measure that you do not have to do but we recommend it to be on the safe side, heat treat your carpets, floors, furniture, and beds with a steam cleaner. Bed bugs are highly vulnerable to heat.
