How To Control Smokey Brown Roachessmoky brown roach

Smokey (or smoky) brown roaches are not the typical roach you would expect to venture on into your house, but its presence tends to freak out homeowners just the same. Smokey brown cockroaches are named obviously for their appearance and color of their body being a smoky looking brown. The Smoky Brown roach is a larger roach and is closely related to the American cockroach, but smaller in size at just over 1 inch. Both male and female Smoky Brown roaches have wings longer than their bodies. They are avid fliers and are a type of roach that uses it’s flying abilities perhaps more than any other roach species.

Smoky brown roaches tend to dehydrate quite easily so they prefer  to reside in areas which are more humid and warmer such as in the southeastern US. but they can be frustrating to control. They are prevalent in areas like Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and East Texas, and other areas extending north along the Mississippi River.

Moisture and hydration is crucial to the survival of the Smoky Brown Roach. While most other roach species can go a couple of weeks without water, the Smoky Brown Roach must drink water at least every two days or it will perish.

While Smoky Brown Cockroaches prefer to live outdoors, they will enter homes during cold weather to seek warmth and shelter. If they find enough sources of food and water to satisfy them, they will likely stick around and make themselves at home so that is when it would be time to implement some control measures.

Smoky brown cockroaches can be overcome and at Solutions Pest and Lawn we can equip you with the essential tools and DIY know-how to eliminate them and keep them out of your home.

How to Get Rid of Smoky Brown Cockroaches: 3 Step Solution

Smoky Brown cockroaches may not be as common as their cousin the American cockroach, they can be frustrating to control especially since they like to fly a lot and can and will fly onto roofs and enter attics and crawl spaces. To eliminate this pest from your home, it will take patience and persistence on your end along with a combination of both exclusion measures and chemical treatment methods. By following the steps we have laid out below you can get rid of Smoky Brown cockroaches from your home easily.

Step one: Smoky Brown roaches like to come into the home from outdoors so before engaging in any chemical treatment, you will need to conduct exclusions measures to your house to make it difficult for cockroaches (or any other insects for that matter) to enter the home. By practicing good maintenance and cleanliness around the home, sealing off as many possibly points of entries into you home that you can with screens, caulk and Stuff-It mesh, you will be able to prevent smoky brown roaches from easily gaining access to your home. Outdoors, make sure to keep gutters clean and remove clutter and debris. Remove or drain any areas with standing water. Stack firewood far away from home and perform any other indoor and outdoor sanitation measures to make your home less appealing to roaches.

Step Two: Once you've taken preventive measures both outside and inside, you can then move on to treating your roach infestation in and around your home with insecticide. We suggest using a combination of baits (Apex cockroach gel), sprays (Reclaim IT)  and dusts (D-Fense Dust) so if roaches are resistant to one method, they may be more responsive to a different method. Baits work best indoors because of it’s delayed reaction and maximum impact of wiping out entire infestation which share the bait amongst one another. U In addition to these products it is also a good idea to use Gentrol point source as an IGR to prevent future infestations. Make sure to place roach baits in likely spots where roaches are likely to travel as close to nesting locations as possible.

Step Three: Once the Smoky brown roach population has been eliminated, you should work to discourage those flying pests from returning through preventative measures. Regularly inspect your home for roach activity and maintain a regular cleaning routine, daily, weekly and monthly to make sure the place is properly sanitized and unwelcoming to roaches.  Spray the exterior perimeter of the house with an insecticide to create a barrier that keeps roaches out. This step is similar to step one in that the focus is on keeping your home and yard clean and clutter free.
