How To Control Black Widow Spidersblack widow spider

The name alone is enough to strike fear in the hearts of homeowners everywhere: the Black Widow Spider. Considered one of the most dangerous and most poisonous spiders in North America, the black widow spider (particularly the female black widow spider) is very aggressive, especially when protecting their eggs or when feeling threatened. These spiders are found throughout the U.S. and have been known to enter homes and hide in dark, undisturbed areas of the home. They are not social creatures and like to be left alone and not be bothered. However, if they are in your home, this can present a problem that may be quite scary to deal with.

Black widow spiders have a distinct look: they are shiny black in color and have a red hourglass-shaped marking on its abdomen. The origin of the name is due to the popular belief that female Black widows kills and eats the male after mating, which does not happen very often.

The black widow can create its habitat either indoors or outdoors. When outdoors, black widow spiders usually live in tucked away areas under stones and in firewood piles. They are often found in barns, outhouses and sheds. Indoors, black widows like to hang around cluttered areas of garages, crawl spaces and basements.

If you have the misfortune of black widow spiders present in your home, you must take immediate action to protect you and your family from the potential harm they can deliver. At Solutions Pest and Lawn we can give you the right control tools you need to rid this pest from your home successfully.

How to Get Rid of Black Widow Spiders: 4 Step Solution

The black widow spider may be a quite difficult to control in the home because of its tendency to lurk in the shadows and exceptional hiding skills. The insect likes to hide in dark secluded areas of the home, areas you may not pay much mind to. However, it’s not impossible if you have the right approach and know-how, which we here at Solutions Pest and Lawn can give you along with offering our great control products. Below we have shared with you 4 simple steps which, if followed closely, will almost certainly guarantee success.

Step 1: Start by creating unfavorable conditions for the black widow spider and carefully getting rid of all of its favorite hiding spots. This can be done by reducing clutter and cleaning up indoors which includes closets, attics, basements, garages, and storage units. If you happen to find webs or egg sacs, sweep them away and discard them.

Step 2: Next we recommend moving on to exclusion, cutting off access into your home. This can be done by sealing cracks on the outside of the home and placing screens on doors and windows. Scan carefully around your home for possible entry points and use caulk to fill those gaps. Do this both inside and outside. Continue exclusion measures by making your outdoor area uninviting by clearing away any vegetation or debris on your yard.

Step 3: Now it’s time to move onto pesticide treatments. Indoors, we recommend treating all your baseboards, around windows and doorways and any other crack or crevices where you think black widow spiders might be entering or hiding with an insecticide aerosol spray with a good residual or an insecticide dust. This product is odorless and goes on “dry” making it a great choice for use inside living areas. Another option is using glue boards indoors to try and capture the brown recluse when he’s hard to find.

Step 4: Outdoors, we suggest using a combination of insecticide granules and spray concentrate. Using a granule spreader, scatter granules around on your lawn, flower beds and mulch areas and then activate the granules by spraying one of our broad spectrum pesticides using a hand-pump sprayer. This concentrate should also be used to make a barrier around your home.
