MSMA Target 6 Plus Herbicide is for post-emergent control of crabgrass, dallisgrass, johnsongrass, nutsedge, pigweed, and chickweed. MSMA is one of the best selective post emergent herbicides but is also dangerous if improperly used. Please read all label instructions before use.

Target Pests

MSMA Herbicide will kill and control dallisgrass (dallasgrass) johnsongrass barnyardgrass chickweed cocklebur crabgrass goosegrass nutsedge pigweed puncture vine and sandburs.

For Use In

MSMA can be used on Cotton Golf courses Sod Farms and highway rights of way for weed control.

Application varies based on application site but it is important to apply MSMA when the temperature is between 80 and 90 degrees. Chlorosis, which is a yellowing of the leaves, may occur for broadcast applications of MSMA. It is normal and the desireable turf grasses should regain their normal color in 7-14 days.

You will want to spray crabgrass, johnsongrass, and dallisgrass during the first or second stage of growth. This is usually done during the spring when grasses are beginning to germinate.

For general applications mix 2 oz of MSMA per gallon of water and apply as a coarse spray to weeds.

Applications may only be made twice per season. Wait a minimum of 10 days between treatments.

Recently MSMA was banned for use on golf courses which was the primary use for it. We primarily sell MSMA into the right of way vegetation management and range and pasture market. There are a few agricultural uses for MSMA during the cotton growing season. It is important to refer to the label from the manufacturer for the most up to date application sites for MSMA herbicide. We try to keep our site as up to date as possible but cannot guarantee the validity of the statements on MSMA.

Coverage Area

Each 2.5 Gallon of MSMA will treat up to 4 acres of turf for various weeds depending on application rate.

Time to Kill

MSMA Target 6 Plus will begin killing weeds immediately. You will notice chlorosis which is discoloration of the plant leaves but it may take up to 14 days until complete control is achieved.

Mix Rate

MSMA should be mixed at a rate of 2oz per gallon of water for general applications. Please refer to the label or give us a call for specific mix rates for particular weeds.

UncleMAtt on May 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You should probably not be using herbicides, insecticides, or sharp implements.

Dose msma kills sand burr ?
A shopper on Aug 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does kill sand burrs. Great product!
Will MSMA kill Mondo Grass. Want to keep the Mondo but have various weeds that have infiltrated. I also have Fusilade and know II is also designed to kill weeds/turf grasses and not kill Mondo.
Aubrey on May 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, it will not kill Mondo grass, Monkey grass or Liriope grass. You instead need to use a commercial grade glyphosate (e.g. Roundup ProMax, Roundup Pro, Ranger Pro, or HomeDepot HDX) product that is somewhere around the range of 40% to 50% glyphosate. The standard Roundup has 18% glyphosate and in my experience will not kill it unless you mix it at least 5X the amount labeled per gal of water. This becomes very cost prohibitive because you'll go through the standard Roundup concentrate after mixing only 2.5 gallons of water. I've had Liriope almost completely take over my yard, and if I remember correctly, when I tested a glyphosate product with 41% concentrate, it took between 2 and 3 weeks before I started to see my Liriope start to brown and die, and then about 6 to 7 weeks later there were bare, circular dirt spots (with absolutely no sign of previous vegetation) where I did my test sprays. I recommend getting the Roundup Pro because of its 50% concentrate.
What is the shelf life?
A shopper on Aug 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You can store the MSMA for about 3 to 5 years before it starts loosing its effectiveness.
Can this be applied if the temperature is over 90 degrees?
A shopper on Aug 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The instructions say, "apply when temp is between 80 and 90 degrees. It does not say what could happen if you do not comply - probably nothing. If there were dire consequences and they did not warn the consumer about them, that would be negligent. If it were me, I would try to comply but if it simply were not possible, I would choose a temp nearest 90 then bravely spray away.
Is it a good time to apply Target 6 right now, this fall?
Robert R on Sep 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It depends on where you are and what you're treating. Here in Texas, we should treat every 6 weeks through September for sandspur.
(according to aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/archives/parsons/turf/grassbur.html)
Can this be used on zoysia
Skin on Aug 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes it is tolerable if applied to properly.

When sprayed on yard is it harmful to dogs?
A shopper on Jan 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The instructions say, keep pets off the treated area until it has been washed into the soil. To me this would mean allowing the treated area to dry for the 24 hour period [for it to take effect] then rinsing it off. Personally, I just don't let the dog out immediately afterward, allowing it to dry off first.
Does it kill grass burrs?
A shopper on Dec 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: MSMA will work great for Grass Spurs, you can also apply a pre-emergent this spring and get control of the infestation of Spurs and other unwanted weeds.

Great option.
Will this kill the sticker weeds? If so when is the best time to apply this product? I have these weeds coming up every where
Kathy on Sep 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: If you mean sand spur, which is a grass, yes. If you mean spurweed, no. Spurweed is just now germinating. Some will germinate in late winter and produce "stickers" late spring or early summer. Check an online weed identification to know. 2,4,D Amine will kill spurweed, especially if treated in the young stage. It becomes difficult to kill with age..
Will this product kill grassburrs?
A shopper on Oct 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would recommend thinking about using a pre-emergent this spring to control grass spurs.

How long should you wait to mow before and after each application of MSMA for dallisgrass control?
Genna P on Oct 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I live in Lubbock, TX and mow approx 3 days before applying MSMA and then depending on outside temps and how fast my bermuda grass grows, I mow 7-14 days after application. I keep the height of my bermuda at approx 2 inches during active growing season.
What makes msma dangerous?
A shopper on Sep 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Try as I did [online], I could not get a definitive answer. My conclusion: It was pulled off the market because of adverse conditions surrounding ONE golf course in Florida and it was not even proved to my satisfaction that MSMA was the cause. Personally, I believe the competition with their inferior weed-killing products won the battle and got it pulled off the market to enhance their own profits.
Will mama kill watermelon vines?
John S on Aug 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is not labeled for this type of weed. You can use Glyphosate to kill the vines be careful not to get it on any other plants that are desirable.

Will target kill Bahaia ?
A shopper on Oct 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Target 6 Plus can be used for selective control of bahiagrass, barnyardgrass, chickweed, smooth and large crabgrass, dallisgrass, nutsedge, sandbur and wood sorrel with little or no injury to well-established, actively-growing turf grasses. Mow turf grass to height of 1 to 1.5 inches before treatment.
How long after spraying yard is it safe for kids to play in the yard?
Ron P on Oct 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't know but I assume that once it dries, it doesn't transfer easily to clothing. It's toxic when air-born (breathed in) or wet. Skin exposure treatment is to wash with water for 20 minutes and call poison control for further info. I would wait a day or two with no rain, myself. It's used on Golf courses if that helps any.
Why can this not be used on residential? I live in the country and my property is considered Agricultural so does that make a difference? Nothing around us but pastures of head tall weeds that no one takes care of.
David C on Sep 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The current EPA label does not allow application to residential turf, only for right of way and golf course spot spraying. That said, up until about 4 or 5 years ago, MSMA was labeled for residential turf use and was the go to for Bermuda an cool season turf grasses. The product hasn't changed so, technically if you find old stock with the old label, it's legally OK but the new product with the new label legally isn't.

Depending on your weed types, there are probably other herbicides that will work as well or better. For sandbur, what MSMA controls most effectively, Imazaquin (Image) is somewhat effective but, control isn't as complete and will require more applications. If you've got a fairly full lawn, better and longer lasting control can be achieved with pre-emergent hrbicides like pendimethalin.
Is it dangerously to animals?
A shopper on Aug 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I've used this product and the discontinued Fert-i-lome MSMA product 'Bermuda Grass Weeder'. My understanding is that pets (animals) should NOT be allowed onto the sprayed land until the product has dried. I've followed this recommendation for repeated applications of MSMA on Bermuda grass lawns and pets are fine.

There is EXTENSIVE info on MSMA on-line. Do your own research as required for best outcomes.
Will this product kill torpedo grass in a Bermuda lawn?
A shopper on Aug 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't know about torpedo grass, if its a broad leaf weed then most likely it will, though you should confirm with product source.
I googled "how to kill mature poana grass without harming Bermuda". This product was the first item google displayed. The site has no mention of killing Poana. Does Target 6 kill Poana?
Tim P on Feb 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You will want to use Revolver to control Poa annua (Annual bluegrass) in your bermuda.

Does msma control broomsedge?
A shopper on Jan 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Broomsedge bluestem, or Andropogon virginicus L. is quite conspicuous this time of year. Its tall stems are the most noticeable feature in many fields. While these tall stems blowing in the wind may look nice, what they represent in terms of soil fertility is anything but that. Broomsedge thrives in conditions that are considered poor for most desirable grass species.

There are no herbicides on the market that will control broomsedge without also killing the surrounding desirable grass species (bahia, bermuda, etc.).

Should be controlled with fertilization.
How long after spraying will I need to wait before I overseed with Rye grass?
Greg W on Oct 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: My major lawn weed issue to control is crab grass. The yard is located in rural area of western Oregon surrounded by pasture, fir and Maple trees. After applying Target 6+ it took another 4 to 5 weeks to notice a significant reduction of crab grass in the lawn. I will apply the herbicide again. Price is great and the shipping was free!
Will MSMA kill Johnson grass roots and all?
Willard H on Sep 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Msma does great to keep my Bermuda lawn weed free. It did seem to struggle with broadleaf weeds but I experimented and if you apply again after 3 weeks of the initial application it killed everything other than my Bermuda. Great product just be careful when you mix to the maximum mixture rate of 2oz/gallon when it is 85 degrees or higher outside. It will fry your Bermuda if your not careful.
Have all of the restrictions that were placed on MSMA in 2009 been lifted? I am wanting to make sure that it can be used on my lawn, everything I have seen online, seems as if it can only be used on golf courses and sod farms, and a few other exceptions. But I really want to use MSMA for the results, just want to make sure I am doing the right thing.
Crystal S on Sep 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The short answer is "yes, you can use MSMA on your lawn", I've read the EPA regs. Here's the relevant text addressing MSMA use for residential turf maintenance: ... existing stocks of MSMA can legally be used for weed control on residential, commercial and sports field turf until they are exhausted, provided that these uses comply with the EPA-approved label and labeling of the affected product.

I assume that Solutions Pest & Lawn is selling from existing stocks. It isn't as though they're hiding their activities. And, FWIW, I've accomplished more "control" in one application this season than during the past 10 years with pre- and postemergence alternatives.

Why does label and video say 1 oz per 5 gal of water, but technical data on this site call for 2 oz per gallon? That is a huge difference.
Jack B on Aug 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Great results on established Bermuda Grass lawns at the 2 oz. per Gallon rate applied at 85 degrees F. and higher on Oklahoma lawns during the summer.

Kills everything...broadleaf and grassy weeds...quickly. Only the Bermuda Grass remains.

2 Oz per gallon was also the rate for the discontinued Fert-i-lome product, 'Bermuda Grass Weeder'. Same results for me on Oklahoma lawns at 85 degrees minimum. No rain or watering for at least 24 hours after application

Joe C on Feb 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Please read the label or make a search on the internet.
We have an outbreak of dallis grass and clover on our football field. We dont have a groundkeeper so its up to the coaching staff. Is MSMA the best we can use and what would be the best mixture? We need to be able to use the field by 8/8 (today is 7/5)
BEST ANSWER: Yes! MSMA is basically the only thing that'll kick Dallisgrass. You'll need to hit it with 3 sequential applications 7-12 days apart each application.
