Some nematodes can be beneficial to your environment, however, the sting nematode is not one of them. Sting nematodes are found mainly in the southeastern and Midwestern United States. Sting nematodes is the largest nematode species, measuring at 3 mm in length. These nematodes primarily reside around deep, sandy soils and they mainly like to feast on the roots of plants. Sting nematodes require soil content to consist of at least 80 percent sand for survival.

The most common grasses that sting nematodes enjoy feeding on and destroying include Seashore Paspalum, Centipede, Bermuda grass and Zoysia. They are also known to do damage to golf courses. The most obvious sign of a sting nematode infestation on your lawn is the wilting of your plants because they feed off of the juices of the plant through the roots by using their stinging stylets, hence their name. How To Get Rid of Sting Nematodes: 3 Step Solution

Putting a stop to sting nematodes destroying your lawn doesn’t have to be difficult. With the right pesticide products at your disposal, sting nematodes will not be able to stand a chance. Solutions has the best products available on the market to take care of sting nematodes as our products are professional grade and are not sold in local big box stores or garden centers. We have laid out a three-step program below on how to get rid of these lawn pests successfully.

Step 1: We recommend starting off with a thorough inspection of your lawn and garden for signs of sting nematodes to find out where the most activity is occurring. Scan your yard, specifically suspicious areas where you notice damage via discolorations or dead grass. We would recommend cutting a square foot sample of turf away from the areas you are observing to get a better look of the soil for any larvae. You can then determine whether you have a small or large infestation. It’s best to treat early if you find an infestation as sting nematodes inflict the most damage during dry and hot summer weather.

Step 2: Now to move onto chemical treatment. Equip yourself with a high-quality insecticide that you can find below and mix into a hand-pump sprayer. You should also make sure that you are wearing protective equipment when handling pesticides, even organic pesticides, for any chance of skin or facial contact which can be irritating or uncomfortable. Mix and utilize the product according to the set instructions on the label. Reapplications may be necessary until you see no further damage to your garden or the presence of sting nematodes has been eradicated.

Step 3: After eliminating the sting nematode infestation, you will need to work to prevent the infestation from returning. Regularly monitor your garden for any signs of damaged turf or leaves. Maintain a regular lawn care schedule which includes watering, fertilizing and mowing. What works best for preventing sting nematodes are relieving additional stresses by raising mowing height, increasing irrigation frequency, improving aeration to roots, and reducing traffic can improve tolerance to sting nematodes. Our pesticides can also be used as a preventative application to keep sting nematodes away from your property.
