How To Control Fall Armywormsfall armyworm

When growing and maintaining a garden, it’s inevitable that you will deal with some threats in the form of pests. One such pest that can cause a lot of destruction if control measures aren’t put into place is the Fall armyworm. Mainly found in the Southern part of the United States, Fall armyworms like to reside on turfs such as bermudagrass, and infest lawns causing moderate to severe damage. Signs of trouble from fall armyworms may appear in the form of brown grass which novice lawn owners mistake has being because of too much sunlight or not enough water. What actually is happening is fall armyworms are chewing blades of grass, zapping the plant of it’s nutrition.

Fall armyworms are the larvae of moths. As larvae, fall armyworms feast on a variety of crops as well as grasses, and when multiplying in large numbers, they often move in unison to new areas to consume food which resembles a marching army--hence the origin of their name. Fall armyworm caterpillars can either be light green or tan in their early growth stage and dark green or brown in later stages. Fully-grown larvae range between 1 and a ½ inch to 2 inches long and are hairless. Their distinguishing traits are  a series of green, yellow, or brown stripes down the length of their bodies

The destruction begins when gray moths in the springtime arrive at lawns to lay eggs, once the eggs hatch, an invasion of armyworms is forthcoming. If you are dealing with fall armyworms on your lawn or garden, we have the pesticides to aid you in your mission to eliminate them.

How to Get Rid of Fall Armyworms: 3 Step Solution

It is very rare that fall armyworms create a large infestation on a lawn because of the fact that the fall armyworm has a lot of predators: wasps, flies, beetles, birds and rodents are among the many consumers of fall armyworms. However, under certain conditions like rainy and wet weather in the fall, armyworms can thrive. With the right pesticide products though, fall armyworms will not be able to stand a chance. Solutions has the best products available on the market to take care of fall armyworms as our products are professional grade and are not sold in local big box stores or garden centers. We have laid out a three-step program below on how to get rid of these bugs successfully.

Step 1: We recommend starting off with a thorough inspection of your lawn and garden for signs of fall armyworms to find out where the most activity is occurring and where their eggs and larvae are concentrated. Scan your yard, specifically suspicious areas where you notice damage via discolorations or dead grass. We would recommend cutting a square foot sample of turf away from the areas you are observing to get a better look of the soil for any larvae. You can then determine whether you have a small or large infestation. It’s best to treat early if you find an infestation as armyworms inflict the most damage during dry and hot summer weather.

Step 2: Now to move onto chemical treatment. Equip yourself with a high-quality insecticide that you can find below and mix into a hand-pump sprayer. You should also make sure that you are wearing protective equipment when handling pesticides, even organic pesticides, for any chance of skin or facial contact which can be irritating or uncomfortable. Mix and utilize the product according to the set instructions on the label. Apply an insecticide late in the afternoon for best control as that is when fall armyworms are most active. Reapplications may be necessary until you see no further damage to your garden or the presence of fall armyworms has been eradicated.

Step 3: After eliminating the fall armyworm infestation, you will need to work to prevent the infestation from returning. Regularly monitor your garden for any signs of damaged turf or leaves. Maintain a regular lawn care schedule which includes watering, fertilizing and mowing. Our pesticides can also be used as a preventative application to keep fall armyworms away from your property.
