doveweedHow to Get Rid of Doveweed from your Lawn

Doveweed may sound like a harmless name for a undesired plant, but this weedy plant can make for quite a challenge to remove from lawns and turfs. Doveweed has become such a problem that it was named one of the top 10 toughest turfs to get rid of on Golf courses. Doveweed is prevalent in the southeastern United States and likes to reside in areas of moisture, which is why they like to set up shop on golf course turf.

We here at Solutions Pest & Lawn can help you to tame this nuisance weed with some tips and our recommended lawn care products that will eradicate doveweed from your land once and for all.

Doveweed Background Information

Doveweed (Murdannia nudiflora) is a summer annual weed species that is a member of the dayflower family and usually germinates later in the growing season than usual compared to other summer annual weeds, becoming a problem quite late in the summer. Doveweed closely resembles a grass.

There are two notable reasons that doveweed becomes such a problem for lawn owners and thrives on lawns and turfs. Firstly, doveweed seeds germinate late during the spring when soil temperatures reach 65-70°F. This poses a problem when lawn owners attempt to control the weed with pre-emergent herbicides in the springtime as the timing of its germination might hinder the effectiveness of the herbicide. Secondly, doveweed leaves can be mistaken for St. Augustinegrass and centipedegrass leaves, which results in doveweed not being noticed by novice lawn maintainers until the plants are large and are displacing the turf.

Doveweed leaves are thick with a shiny rubbery texture and produces creeping stems (stolons). Upon closer inspection, you will find that doveweed has stems that root at the nodes and purple flowers that appear on short stalks in clusters.

How To Effectively Eliminate Doveweed

Recommended Post-emergents:

From our trials and experiences with treating doveweed we found what works best are the above herbicides. What you choose depends upon your preference and how much you are willing to spend. We would also recommend a mixture of chemical control with cultural control by not over-mowing or over-watering your turf, which would help doveweed to thrive further.

Blindside has been known to really take it to doveweed and Atrazine also provides great control. We would recommend repeated applications to ensure that doveweed is totally eradicated from your turf. Timing is also important as doveweed is better controlled when the plants are young and actively growing.

Doveweed seeds can live for several years in the soil, so it may take two to three years of continuous control to deplete doveweed populations. Although herbicides are useful tools to control doveweed, the most important factor to prevent doveweed problems is to have vigorous healthy turf. Doveweed requires a lot of sunlight, so if the turf effectively shades the ground, doveweed will have a hard time growing and producing new seed.

Doveweed Control Tips and Recommendations

  • A great complement to your herbicide application is mixing your selected weed killer with a  surfactant. This will help the herbicide to stick better to the plant so you see the best end  results.

  • Please read the manufacturer’s label carefully and follow directions. Application rates vary depending on the type of herbicide you are using so make sure you don’t overmix.

  • Handling herbicide chemicals can harm or irritate when contacted.Protect your eyes, skin, mouth and nose by wearing protective equipment any time you use herbicide chemicals.
