Beggarweed ControlHow to Get Rid of Beggarweed: Tips and Tricks

Among the many common varieties of weeds that grow on lawns, one of the most excruciatingly frustrating is Beggarweed. Simply scour the internet and you’ll find forum topics and commenters complaining aloud about how beggarweed is invading their lawns and that pulling and digging out the weed does absolutely nothing. One such topic even labeled beggarweed as the “unkillable weed”. If you have beggarweed, this may sound like a losing battle, but there is hope, or should we say, a “Solution” from your pals at Solutions Pest and Lawn.

Beggarweed Background Information

Beggarweed (Desmodium incanum),also popularly known as Creeping Beggarweed, is a broadleaf perennial commonly found in the Southeastern part of the United States. Beggarweed features a lаrgе tарrооt with mаnу lоng, multi-branched ѕtоlоnѕ rооtіng аt the nodes. This causes thе “сrееріng” characteristic which gives the weed it’s popular name. Beggarweed has many branched runners capable of rooting at nodes along the stems. Leaves are composed of three leaflets of various sizes. The leaflets are usually elliptic in shape, pointed at the tip and rounded at the base. Both the stems and leaves are also hairy.

Beggarweed can also be easily identified by their flowers which are pink to rose in color. The fruit is composed of a segmented seedpod with 6 segments that will separate and attach to clothing. Beggarweed is also known to quickly spread on turfs that they invade because they have more than one way of spreading (by seed, stolons or segments of the taproot.)

What makes Beggarweed so hard to control on lawns is their large taproot and deep rhizomes which makes hand-pulling frustratingly difficult and largely ineffective. The plant also produces jointed seedpods which can easily come apart and spread when physically pulled out.

Control Methods for Beggarweed

As we mentioned above, because of beggarweeds deep root system, digging and pulling out the plants we do nothing to eliminate the invader from your lawn. Also many landscapers and homeowners have complained online about this difficult weed not being affected by many common herbicides. So just how does one safely remove beggarweed without damaging their turfgrass? We have the answer.

First off, if herbicides are being used from your local garden center or in an aisle at a big box store and they aren’t doing the trick, it’s because those products do not have the type of strength that professional-grade concentrates have, which is what we sell at Solutions stores.
