How To Control Buckthornbuckthorn

Buckthorn may be an invasive plant on land but it can also grow in bodies of water and disrupt the natural habitat as well as become an obstacle when it comes to trying to enjoy recreational activities like fishing, boating or swimming. Buckthorn is also known as European buckthorn and is a tall, shrub which was introduced to North America in the early 1800s. It was brought to the country initially as an ornamental shrub, primarily to serve as hedges. However, this woody shrub was quickly discovered to be a hard to control pest which could thrive in a variety of conditions and on both land and water.

Buckthorn is able to invade and choke out other nearby native plant species with its fast growth rate and distinctive phenology. Buckthorn grows it’s leaves in early Spring and is able to hold on to them late into the fall; this allows buckthorn to continue growing when most native species have gone dormant.

Buckthorn is also able to thrive wherever they have established because of the fact that they have few predators. Most animals and insects don’t like to eat buckthorn which allows it to grow and spread without issue. Combine this fact with its plentiful seed production, and it's not hard to see how it can very quickly establish itself and come to dominate wetlands, savannas and other natural areas.

If you are dealing with buckthorn, you can remove this invasive species the right way by using aquatic herbicides carried by Solutions Pest and Lawn.

How To Get Rid of Buckthorn: 3 Step Solution

When controlling aquatic weeds like buckthorn, it can be quite an arduous task if you don’t know the right approach to take. You can go the manual route and either mechanically or physically remove the weeds but we’d advise against it. The reasons is being that if you have a larger buckthorn problem where they have heavily overrun your pond or lake, physical control may be too labor intensive and time-consuming to execute. At Solutions Pest and Lawn we have aquatic herbicides which you can use to kill off buckthorn and prevent further growth. Take a look at our 3 step plan below where if followed closely, you can easily eliminate your buckthorn issue conveniently and efficiently.

Step 1: All chemical control treatments should start with a careful inspection. Survey your lake or pond and determine what the best and safest plan of option there is to take. You have to take into consideration how the lake or pond is utilized not only by humans but also the fishes and aquatic life that inhabits the water. Asking yourself these questions and weighing the pros and cons of control before proceeding with selecting the best aquatic herbicide for the removal process.

Step 2: Once you have carefully analyzed your pond and lake, you can than move on to selecting a treatment method to manage the buckthorn growth. At Solutions Pest and Lawn we have a large selection of different aquatic herbicides which come in both liquid or granular forms. Liquid herbicides are a great solution because they attack weed growth in shallow water on or above the ponds surface and can be spread evenly with a pump sprayer. This makes the control process efficient and convenient to physical removal.

Granular herbicides are best another good option especially when weeds are submerged as blankets under the water surface in deep areas of the pond or in ponds with flowing water. These heavier granules can be applied with a hand spreader and will sink directly onto the weed beds. What you select is entirely up to your personal preference.

Step 3: Apply the the selected herbicide to your pond or lake during ideal temperatures and following the instructions carefully on the product label of the herbicide you chose. Depending on the size of your pond or lake, you may need to conduct treatment in sections, waiting 2 weeks between treatments until you’ve treated the entire body of water. There is a more detailed guide on applying herbicide to aquatic weeds in our Knowledge base.
