ARE YOUR CREEPY CRAWLER NEIGHBORS’ HELPERS OR PESTS?

Bug Lady posted this on Aug 4, 2016

It is common to misidentify bugs and lump them all together as bad. Common, but not at all correct! Here at Solutions Pest & Lawn, we want to clear up this misconception. Many bugs are not only harmless but actually play a beneficial role for humans and the environment!

STRUGGLING TO DETERMINE IF THE BUG IN YOUR HOUSE OR GARDEN ARE HELPERS OR PESTS? HERE ARE SOME HELPERS TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR!

One of the best ways to tell if a bug is one of the good guys or one of the nasty pests is to know who the good guys are. So who are some of the insects you want to have around?

Here at Solutions Pest & Lawn, we have some personal favorites on the friendly insects list, and here they are!

  • Praying Mantis – These stick-like insects, named for the praying positions in which they hold their front legs, are major predators in the bug kingdom and your garden’s best friend! Their voracious appetites mean they will eat any living thing that can fit into their mouth including aphids, every garden’s headache inducing pest!
  • Ground Beetles – This shiny black beetle who likes to make its home under rocks and in shady plant beds is another friend. They are known to snack on slugs, snails, and maggots that would otherwise destroy your plants.
  • Bees – While buzzing insects may make you nervous, and their stings can be unpleasant to say the least, they and other pollinators offer an invaluable service to your garden as well as you!
  • Dung Beetles – It’s a nasty job, but somebody’s got to do it! These green and black beetles consume 90 percent of cattle dung and help to keep the fly population under control.
  • Ladybugs – These little ladies, and gents, work hard to protect your plants from destructive bugs like aphids. These little red bugs with black polka dots can consume an impressive 50 aphids a day!
  • Green Lacewings – These delicate-looking green insects with netlike wings are surprisingly capable predators. They keep the population of soft-bodied bugs in your garden under control!
  • Spined Soldier Bugs – This bug is of the stinky variety, it emits a foul smell when disturbed. Despite it’s rather unpleasant habit, they are good soldiers! They keep a variety of destructive bugs at bay.

If it’s a pest and not a helper, come toSolutions Pest & Lawn for your pest control problems!
