7 Super Effective Ways to Protect You and Your Family from Mosquito Bites This Summer

Camille Landry posted this on Apr 28, 2017

Dead mosquitoes

The weather is getting warmer and while it can be a time for excitement for friends and family--school’s out for the kiddos, water parks and neighborhood pools open their doors, BBQs and picnics aplenty--the summertime also brings about the return of bloodthirsty mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes are universally hated for their tendency to ruin those summer BBQs and get-togethers at the park or even your own backyard with their feverish appetite for our blood. It doesn’t help that they have the potential to spread diseases like Zika according to the CDC. In fact, statistics show that mosquitoes are by far the deadliest insect in the world, accounting for 725,000 worldwide deaths a year. (Source: Smithsonian Mag)

For as long as they have been plaguing us with their presence, people have been trying to invent newer ways to kill mosquitoes off or repel them.

Mosquito Control: What Works and What Doesn’t

Heading to your local neighborhood department store, you’ll find a variety of mosquito repellants and even while scouring the internet you’ll find videos of amateurs telling you different unique ways they promise will keep mosquitoes at bay. The results vary from moderately helpful to absolutely useless.

The experts here at Solutions Pest & Lawn advise you to not fall for all the gimmicks out there. Don’t waste your time or money with anything that isn’t proven be scientists and entomologists.

Below we have compiled a list of tips and techniques as well as recommended products to use that have been given the special stamp of approval by scientific researchers and our licensed entomologists.

By applying even a few of these recommendations, you and your family will be able to enjoy the outdoors more this summer without the lingering threat of mosquitoes.

1. Fight off Mosquito Bites with DEETDEET spraying

When it comes to keeping mosquitoes off of your skin, you can’t go wrong with DEET which is a go-to active ingredient for insect repellents.

DEET is short for the chemical name N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide. This tried and true method of keeping mosquitoes from biting has been the standard for quite some time and any new method of mosquito control is tested to see if it is able to stack up against DEET.

While DEET is probably the most well-known of the repellents there are other methods that work well to keep mosquitoes away. Products and sprays containing oil of lemon eucalyptus (PMD), picaridin and IR 3535.

These products provide great long-lasting protection.

2. Put Permethrin On Your Clothing

While it’s recommended to never put this product on skin, permethrin serves as an excellent mosquito repellent when sprayed upon clothes.

Permethrin is a pyrethroid, a synthetic chemical developed to be similar to the natural insecticide pyrethrum which comes from the chrysanthemum plant, but it remains effective for prolonged periods of time.

Spray your clothes with permethrin-based products, which we carry a number of different products in stock in our stores. The awesome thing about permethrin is that it doesn’t just keep mosquitoes away, it can also repel and kill ticks, chiggers and other biting insects and arthropods.

Permethrin lasts long on your clothing as well, on average for up to 6 weeks it’ll be effective. Permethrin is so trusted to keep mosquitoes away that the U.S. army has been treating their clothing with the chemical for more than 20 years.

3. Install a Mosquito Misting Systemmosquito misting system

While putting repellents and sprays on your skin and clothing may make sense when you are traveling or camping out in the wilderness, it can be pretty annoying to need to slather yourself up when you are in your own backyard.

With a mosquito misting system you won’t have to! This product is especially useful for those families who like to spend lots of time in their backyard in the summer and enjoy the fresh air, or people who like to throw parties and get-togethers regularly.

Solutions Pest & Lawn is a proud dealer of Mistaway Mosquito Misting Systems. While a mosquito misting system can be pricey, it can be a worthy investment to have regular automatic sprayings when you are spending time outdoors and there is not a single mosquito in sight.

4. Eliminate Standing WaterStagnant water

A simple way to eliminate the threat of mosquitoes congregating around your yard that doesn’t require buying any products is strategically making your home less appealing to mosquitoes by making sure to eliminate any places where there is stagnant water.

Mosquitoes is a vital part of mosquito survival, basically just as important as the blood they need to feed on and reproduce. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water and they eventually hatch into larvae.

Take a walk around your yard to ensure you don’t have any standing water, especially after rainfall. It’s easy to have water build up if you accidentally left a bucket outside, so be sure to empty anything that could create a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.

5. Use Mosquito Dunks

There may be some cases where you will be unable to empty standing water around your yard, for instance, a pond or a fountain. In these cases, you can still combat the presence of mosquitoes by laying out mosquito dunks

Mosquito dunks, like  Bactimos Mosquito Control Dunks, contain a larvicide which will kill mosquito larvae and prevent them from growing into bloodsucking adult mosquitoes. This is a fairly cost-effective way to eliminate the mosquito issues around your yard.

6. Use a Mosquito Fogger

Another smart product to use if you are planning an outdoor party or wanting to engage in some backyard fun is to use a mosquito fogger. We advise against using those generic fogger you’d find at a big box store.

We here at Solution recommend using a high quality mosquito fogger, either a ULV fogger or a thermal fogger. These mosquito foggers are the type the pros use and by utilizing one of these before a backyard outing, mosquitoes will either be hitting the ground and dropping dead or would be staying as far away as possible from your yard.

7. Treat your Yard With Insecticidesspraying your yard

Sometimes it’s best to roll up your sleeves, arm yourself with a sprayer and applying insecticides to your yard. While you may be tempted to go to your local home center and go to the pest control aisle for the mosquito killers they have on their shelves, more often then not you’ll be disappointed with the ineffectiveness.

We recommend buying high quality insecticides which is what the professionals would use if you hired them to treat your yard, without the price of labor. We recommend an insecticide concentrate which we have a wide selection you can choose from , like Reclaim IT Insecticide.

Spray it on the grass, shrubs, and landscaped areas to create a barrier that mosquitoes won’t dare cross cross. The barrier, which is typically made with natural oils which can repels mosquitoes without releasing fumes or chemicals that could be harmful to children and pets.

While Mosquitoes can’t be 100% eliminated from the equation so you’ll be totally bite free, these tips and products can drastically reduce their presence and the chances of a miserable time outside in your backyard.
