Ask A Pro: Grassy Weed Control on Fescue Lawn

posted this on Mar 23, 2017

Here's a transcript of a recent live chat with a customer who wanted to know what the best weed-killer is to treat fescue lawns. Check out the response below:

Solutions Representative : Welcome to Solutions Stores live chat. Where we aim to solve your pest problems! My name is ____. How may I help you?
Visitor : Hi, I primarily have a fescue lawn, which some bermuda mixed in in the front lawn. I have some random grassy weeds that I haven't identified. Is there a well rounded herbicide that will likely kill the non-desireable grassy weeds. I don't care for the bermuda, so if that is also killed in the process that's fine. I'll fill in with fescue seed in the fall.
Solutions Representative : Yes and no, I have a product that can be used on the Bermuda because it is a stronger type of grass it can handle stress a lot better. However, the fescue would be damaged in this case. If it was only broadleafs then yes we could find a product that will only kill the broadleafs and not harm the fescue.
Visitor: so, for grassy weeds, is the best management through proper application of pre-emergent? I already have 2,4-D and Triclopyr which manages broadleaf weeds well.
Solutions Representative : Yes this would be best also apply fertilizer to make the lawn strong enough to eradicate the unwanted weeds.
