Tips for Effective Flea Control

Bug Lady posted this on Oct 6, 2016

Fleas are small, wingless parasites with mouths designed to pierce the skin and suck blood. Blood is their primary source of food and most that are found in the house prefer to feast on dogs, cats or rodents. Although many people think they are in the clear if they do not own pets, they can be acquired many ways and will snack on humans when necessary. Fleas can be obtained on your pet from dog parks, regular parks, boarding facilities, doggy day cares, other pets, etc. Although it is more difficult for humans to carry fleas, they can be obtained similarly or from homes with pets, or pets that come into your home.

Helpful tips for effective flea control

When you find out that you, your pet or your home has fleas, or you know you have been exposed, it is important to take proper precautions:

  • Wash – Even if you think you might have fleas you want to make sure you wash everything possible. Sheets, pillows, throw blankets, rugs, etc. can hold fleas, larvae or eggs.
  • Clean the carpet – We have many carpet sprays or solutions that will help kill the larvae living in the carpet. After a mature flea lays eggs on your pet, the egg drops to the floor and hatches in the carpet. The larva lives there through the pupa or cocoon stage and then moves on when it becomes a mature flea.
  • Treat animals – Using a preventative flea treatment on a monthly to bi –monthly basis is the most effective and surefire way to prevent a flea infestation. If they do get fleas it is important to use a flea treatment for pets to get rid of them quickly and effectively.
  • Treat your home – Although fleas primarily live on animals, treating your home is important to make sure the fleas are gone. There are many flea control treatments for your home to choose from and it won’t be hard to find one for your specific needs.

At the first sign of fleas, including excessive itching, bites, visibility on your pet, etc., it is crucial to get the right flea control products so that the issue can be halted quickly. Remember these tips to get the best outcome possible and to safe guard your home from fleas.
