HOW TO CONTROL CRAZY ANTS

DON’T LET THESE GUYS DRIVE YOU CRAZY!

Crazy ants, also know as crazy raspberry ants, are an invasive insect that is quickly spreading across the U.S. They have been found mostly on the Gulf Coast, but recent reports show colonies in Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston. Look out, the crazy ants could be coming to a backyard near you!

Top Tips for Controlling Crazy Ants
If crazy ants are trying to invade your back yard, these tips and ant control products might just save the day.

Tip 1: Eliminate Any Food or Water Sources
To begin controlling the ant population, you will need to eliminate any of their food or water sources. By reducing the ants access to these two life-sustaining elements, you will encourage them to leave your yard and live some place else. Below are a few of the crazy ants’ favorite food sources.

  • Sugar
  • Honeydew from farmed insects
  • Dead Insects
  • Aphids
  • Mealybugs
  • Whiteflies

Remove any standing water from your yard. This includes: bird baths, fountains, dog water dishes, and any other item that collects water. You should also plan on turning off your automatic lawn sprinkler for at least a few days. The less access that the ants have to water, the less likely they will continue to breed.

Tip 2: Keep Crazy Ants Out of Your Home
Your home kitchen and pantry are the perfect attractions for crazy ants. Inside these areas, they can find bags of sugar, flour, and other packaged food. To discourage ants from entering your kitchen, keep the latter items in sealed glass or plastic containers. You can further combat the problem by weatherproofing your windows and doors. Seal up any miniscule cracks or openings that the ants will use to their advantages.

Tip 3: Get Rid of the Colony Queen
Generally speaking, it should be pretty easy to find the source of your crazy ant infestation. Once you have found the home, you will need to get rid of the queen. This is sometimes easier said than done. To help you dethrone the queen, here are a few helpful tips.

  • Use a shovel to dig up the nest. Be careful that the ants don’t attack you, while they try to defend their home. Where tall rubber boots, and tight fitting clothes; you don’t want ants to have access to any uncovered skin.
  • Use a certified ant control product to incapacitate the queen.
  • Flood the colony with water.

Tip 4: The Live-And-Let-Live Approach
For any readers that want to let the ants live in peace, but don’t want to be bothered by constant yard or home intrusions, try the following two tips.

  • Pour a border of dry molasses along three sides of the colony. This will provide the ants with an immediate food source and keep them out of your kitchen or pantry.
  • Grow ant-repellant plants along the exterior of your home and outdoor patio areas. Ant repellent plants include: Pennyroyal, Sage, Mint, Peppermint, and Catnip.

There are many ways that you can work to control crazy ants. Using a professional line of pest control solutions will help you to DIY and efficiently rid your home of crazy ants. No matter which method you choose, make sure that you are diligent in your efforts, otherwise the ants will quickly invade both your yard and your home!
