How To Get Rid of Flies

Introduction

Adult house flies have a size that is approximately ⅛-¼th of an inch. The females will be gray and bigger as compared to the males. Both genders sport two and four black stripes on their head and middle of the body, respectively.

Recognizing a Fly Infestation

If you are unsure as to whether you should start applying measures to get rid of flies, then consider the following signs. The signs will help you recognize if your house has become the spot for fly infestation or not:

  • In their larval stage, the flies are in the form of maggots. If you find maggots in different parts of the property, then it means that the flies aren’t just there; they are also breeding! The best places to look for maggots are close to waste disposal areas and anywhere else rotting food might be present.

  • Another familiar sign of a fly infestation are the small dark spots found in clusters. You will be able to spot them the pinhead-sized spots in light fittings, on wall surfaces, and on the ceiling.

  • Of course, this is the sign that is easiest to spot and most obvious: if you can see large numbers of flies aggregated in one place regularly, it means you might have a fly problem. You will find the flies congregating close to the refuse areas, garbage bins etc. Other places where flies can make their home include gutters, waterlogged pots, and rainwater barrels.

Below we mention two kinds of solutions. First, we tell you how to prevent fly infestations from ever becoming a problem. Next, we discuss the different ways you can get rid of the flies, if it does happen:

Fly Repellents

Vodka

Maybe it is the smell; maybe it is something else but for some reason, flies and vodka don’t go together. You can take advantage of its fly repellent nature and use vodka to ward off flies. Here is what you will need:

  • Vodka 2 cups

  • Aloe vera juice 4 tsp

  • Lemon eucalyptus oil 2 tsp

Mix everything in a bowl and pour into a spray bottle. Next spray it on the fly-infested areas. The mixture is safe for use on the skin as well. However, we recommend that you apply it to only a small area before you spray more parts of your body. That way, if you are allergic to the mixture, you will know immediately.

Lemongrass Oil

Lemongrass oil is a well known fly repellent because of the strong aroma. When you make the repellent mentioned below, you will not just get rid of the flies. You will also leave your home with a refreshing smell!

Here are the ingredients you will need:

  • 40-50 drops of lemongrass essential oil

  • 1 cup of hot water about

Mix in a spray bottle, which will also make it easier to apply to different surfaces in your home. Spray the solution on all fly-infested areas, including any doorways and windows.

Other essential oils can also be used instead of the lemongrass oil. The list of oils includes the following:

  • Lavender

  • Eucalyptus

  • Pennyroyal

  • Citronella

  • Peppermint

Fly Traps

Vinegar

The strong scent of vinegar makes it a good candidate for a fly trap. Here is what you will need:

  1. In a shallow bowl, pour two inches worth of apple cider vinegar.

  2. Next drop in two tbsp of sugar

  3. Complete the trap by splashing in some fruit-scented dish soap.

  4. Leave the dish without covering it in a place where it will attract the flies.

Soda Bottle Traps

  1. For this, you will require two-liter soda bottle. A plastic one will do nicely.

  2. Make a cut close to where the label of the soda used to be and keep cutting until you can remove one third of the bottle. Don’t throw that part away yet!

  3. Using the remaining part of the bottle as a container, add sugar water syrup to it.

  4. Now grab the upper part of the bottle that you preserved. Place it upside down on the lower part, making a cone-like structure.

  5. Leave it in a place frequented by flies.

Milk

For this effective trap, you will need the following things:

  • ½ litre milk

  • 6 tsp sugar

  • 2 tbsp ground black pepper

Take a pan and add all the ingredients together. Put on heat and allow it to simmer for 5 – 10 minutes. Remove from heat and pour the mixture into shallow bowls. Place the bowls in places you are sure flies will visit.

All of the methods will trap flies and you can dispose of them later.

Water

You might know that flies are insects with compound eyes. This means unlike the single lens that we have in our eyes, their eyes have close to 8000 of them! The compound eyes give them the ability to detect motion immediately. It also enables them to interpret the changing patterns of light.

This is why, hanging a transparent plastic bag that has been filled with water can help deter flies. When they approach the bag, the water will make the light passing through it reflect in all directions. There is, however, a drawback to this method. It can only be used during the daytime.
