How to Get Rid of Spiders Naturally

Admit it, all of us have thought about how cool it would be if we got bit by a spider  and suddenly came to acquire supernatural powers. Peter Parker was one lucky dude, but if you have watched “The Eight Legged Freaks”, then you know spiders are evil incarnates.

Its funny how there are dozens of movies on evil spiders and only one where the kid becomes the “Spiderman”. Alas, none of them are true! These eight legged freaks are nothing to be scared of, as their bite is very similar to the sting of a bee. However, a spider bite and its nest can be very dangerous if you don’t know its species.

Before revealing the details of how you can get rid of spiders, let’s get to know a little more about these creepy crawlies:

About Spiders

There are around 45,700 species of spiders found all over the world, except in Antarctica. Out of these, the four most deadly spiders that have caused around 100 deaths all over the world in the past 50 years are widow spiders, recluse spiders, funnel web spiders, and the Brazilian wandering spider. Their bite is so venomous that people die within an hour.

The most common spider found in households is the cobweb spider. This type of spider is attracted to the dark, which is why it mostly inhabits corners of attics, basements, and rooms.

Eight Ways to Get Rid Of Spiders

  • Essential Oil Repellent Spray

An all-natural repellent, this home-made spray will not only keep the spiders away but will also leave a nice smell behind.

The ingredients include peppermint and lavender oil, water, and apple cider vinegar. It won’t leave any toxic waste and can be sprayed on bedding, upholstery, carpets, etc. However, spray from a distance, as the oils can leave stains.

Here are the directions for making the spray:

  1. Peppermint essential oil: 3 drops

  2. Lavender essential oil: 3 drops

  3. Water: 1 quart

  4. Apple cider vinegar: 1 tablespoon

Mix all the liquids and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray it around doors and windows, inside cracks, light fixtures, high and low corners and any other dark area where spiders might hide. Spray once a week during the peak season.

  • White Vinegar

White vinegar and water works wonders when eliminating spiders. While the solution does not kill spiders, it does keep them away. Mix equal parts water and vinegar and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray it directly on spiders and corners where you have seen them. As a precaution, spray it in cracks along the wall and crevices.

  • Tobacco

Tobacco water or powder can be used to kill spiders. Since tobacco has a strong odor, to mask its smell and make it more powerful, add a little lemon juice to the mix. Since lemon has acidic properties, it helps to keep the spiders away.

Boil tobacco leaves in water and let it cool. Pour it into a spray bottle and add a few drops of lemon juice. Spray it directly over the spiders and their nests.

  • Salt

Salt is the most efficient natural poison that kills spiders. Add two teaspoons of salt to water and shake it in a bottle until the salt dissolves. Use a spray bottle and spray the solution directly on spiders and their nests.

  • Orange Peels

Spiders don’t like citrusy scents. Peels of fruits like grapefruit, lemons and oranges make for great spider repellents. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Cut an orange peel into tiny squares and set ¼th of the chunks aside

  2. Place the chunks in a bowl and pour boiling water over it

  3. Let it sit overnight

  4. Strain the chunks and pour the water into a spray bottle

  5. Add quarter cup witch hazel to the water

  6. Smash the remaining chunks and sprinkle it under sinks, in cabinets and other places where you usually see spiders

  7. Spray the mixture in crevices, floorboard cracks and every corner of the room

  • Onion

While this is an old wives’ tale, there’s no harm in trying it. Slice some onions and toss them in water. Keep this mixture in a bowl and place it where you see spiders entering the home.

  • Turmeric

Turmeric is one of the most common household ingredients and makes for a great spider repellent. Add two tablespoons of it in water and make a paste. Dip cotton balls into the mixture and place them in areas where you have seen spiders the most. Make sure that the cotton ball does not touch any upholstery because turmeric stains are impossible to remove.

  • Eucalyptus Plants

The menthol-like smell of eucalyptus is something that spiders despise. Place a few pots of eucalyptus near your window and outside the front door to block off entry for spiders. Not only does eucalyptus make for a great indoor plant, it also leaves the house smelling clean and fresh.

To prevent spiders from forming a nest in the first place, you need to clean the house thoroughly. Vacuum under the beds, carpets and behind the sofas. Make sure your room is not cluttered, so that you can vacuum freely. Along with sweeping all the nooks and crannies, dust the walls once a week and cover any holes or cracks with caulk.

While deadly spiders are seldom found indoors, it’s still important to get rid of cobwebs. Try any one of these eight solutions and you will not have to deal with another spider!
