How to Get Rid of Spider Mites

Spider mites are categorized as arachnids that are related with Spiders, Scorpio and other similar animals. They are not classified as true insects since they have more than six legs. They live in colonies underneath the leaves, preferably in hot and dry conditions and feed on plant extract and leaves. They are tiny oval shaped pest can cause a lot of damage.

METHODS OF GETTING RID OF SPIDER MITES

  1. Using Oils for Killing the Mites

Special oil made of Neem Tree leaves and vegetable oils or petroleum are effective in killing spider mites. They are can easily be purchased from the local store. These oils are made from organic compounds and kills the spider mites immediately. It is advised to use proper equipment like a Mister, a hand pressure-sprayer which evenly spreads the oil. Once the mite comes in contact with the oil it gets killed.

  1. Spraying insecticides on the spider mites

Various insecticides are available here at Solutions Pest & Lawn for eradicating the spider mites. These are as follows:

Cyonara 9.7 Insecticide: When using such chemicals, it is advisedto use a pressure sprayer to ensure the insecticide gets evenly spread out. The chemical has to be sprayed for at least 15 minutes making sure all leave are dampened with Cyonara.  While watering plants, the roots can also be sprayed as it takes care of the mites underneath and does not damage the plants. Make sure the chemical is used regularly and a fan air is blown towards the plants to dry off the chemical.

ESSENTRIA-IC3: This is a combination of various horticultural oils and is known to kill bugs other than spider mites. Its effects last for around 8 to 12 hours due to which the insecticide must be applied regularly. A spray and fan will help the eradication process.

INSECTICIDAL SOAP SPRAY: This insecticidal soap consists of fatty acid salts that damage the outer shell of the spider mites. It is important to cover the whole area infested by spider mites as its effects are not long lasting. Therefore, other measures may also need to be taken.

PYRETHRUM SPRAY: Suspend SC This is one of the most highly recommended spider mite knock out sprays, it must be used with caution as it can burn the plants if not used carefully.  Make sure the lights and ventilation is shut off before using them on the spider mites. Using a fogger will give more effective results in eliminating the problem. The spray kills the adult spider mites immediately but does not have the same impact on the eggs. In order to control the breeding regular spraying of the substance to extinguish the colony is important. Avoid inhaling the air in which the chemical has been sprayed.

Sylo InsecticideSylo is a strong chemical insecticide which kills the spider mites on immediate contact.

The product  must be diluted with water in a proportion of 1:5. One part Sylo and 5 parts water. It terminates the mites on immediate contact and is organic in nature. Again using a “Mister” spray is useful.

  1. Vaporize the spider mites

The pest strips consist of a chemical that creates a vapor that kills the spider mites. The vapor is toxic and can be harmful to others. After use, you should keep your distance from the area where the product has been used.

  1. Food chemical for the spider mites

Diatomaceous Earth is a food grade chemical, a fossil dust that can be scattered on soil and all other places where the spider mites have infested.  On close contact, the spider mites get dehydrated due to tears and get exterminated. However, it cannot be used to control a widespread infestation. Other measures must also be used along with Diatomaceous earth.

  1. Environmental control

Certain features of the surroundings can be modified in order to make the surroundings inhospitable for the spider mites to infest. The spider mites are not able to breed in cooler windy environment, creating a cooler breezy surrounding and allowing the air to circulate will control or at least minimize the number of spider mites. The plants already infested with spider mites should be isolated from the rest as transfer very easily.

Additionally, spider mites dislike damp and shady conditions. Hence, using humidifiers and keeping plants outside when the weather is humid and providing shade using containers and other materials will also help in containing them by minimizing their numbers and relocating elsewhere.

Biological means of controlling mites

Apart from spider mites there are other mites that prey on spider mites and clean every one of them. They are commercially available. Few of the mites of such kind are as follows:

  • Phytoseiulus longpipes:  These African mitesare used prominently by gardeners to eradicate the spider mites. It requires a warm temperature.

  • Phytoseiulus persimilis: This particular biological agent not only eliminates the spider mites but once they are done preying on them, they finish off their own population by feeding off one another.

  • Metaseiulus occidentalis: These mites require a certain temperature in which they kill the spider mites. The temperature should range between 44 degrees to 89 degrees Fahrenheit.

Conclusion

The above-mentioned methods are effective in eliminating spider mites. Depending on the level of infestation, it is recommended that you start with simpler methods and move to harsher ones if the spider mites continue to grow. All sorts of prevention control and treatment techniques must be used according to the suitability of the individual and level of infestation.
