How to Get Rid of Fishy Smells In Your Home

No matter how delicious and tasty some dishes are, their preparation can result in unpleasant smells remaining in your house. There is no doubt that meals involving fish serve as the primary example of such dishes. Fish delicacies can be incredibly delicious but the joy of consuming them is sometimes nullified by the odor that spreads and remains in the house after preparation. Cooking fish, especially if they are being broiled or fried for the dish that you are preparing, usually leaves an unpleasant smell which can really make anybody lose their appetite!

Why does it smell?

The cells of any ocean dwelling species contain a lot of amines and amino acids. This is to specifically counter the saltiness in seawater. Trimethylamine oxide is one of the main ones (‘TMAO’). Once a fish is dead, the bacteria in the atmosphere begin to attack the flesh. Muscles which contain TMAO start decomposing, and the TMAO chemically breaks down into the amine known as trimethylamine (TMA). It is the trimethylamine (TMA) which carries that odor. One thing to keep in mind is that if a fish is fresh, it will not smell as much. However if the smell is particularly strong, you shouldn’t buy it as it will be quite old.

The problem is that the smell can linger in the house for as long as days sometimes. However you needn’t fear as there are some extremely simple ways in which you can eliminate the odor from the kitchen swiftly.

Here are some of the tips and natural remedies for neutralizing fish odors:

  1. Keep the windows open

This is more of a preemptive measure compared to a solution for getting rid of the odor, but make sure that your kitchen is being ventilated when you are cooking. This will ensure the constant circulation of fresh air in the kitchen. Fresh air is a surefire solution to eventually get rid of any home smell; opening surrounding windows and door can result in the creation of air currents which will carry the smell out.

  1. Make some coffee

Once you have cooked the fish, make some coffee in the kitchen. Brewing coffee and grinding coffee beans are ways in which unpleasant odors can be countered easily. Adding certain spices (nutmeg, cinnamon etc) make the aroma stronger.

  1. Bake something with a pleasant aroma

Baking any bakery item such as cookies or cake is an easy solution for eliminating unpleasant odors.

  1. Making potpourri

A pot of simmering potpourri not only counters unpleasant smells but acts as an effective air freshener as well. Heat up a pot of water to a gently simmering level and add some cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, cloves or citrus peels. Let the resultant potpourri simmer for approximately an hour and add water if necessary.

  1. Leave some vinegar out

Keeping some vinegar in a small bowl next to your stove can be extremely useful for decreasing the odor of frying fish. It would be ideal to leave the vinegar for a few hours.

  1. Air-fresheners

Use an electric air freshener that periodically sprays the air to get rid of the fishy smell in the home. There are a variety of scents that you can use.

Use natural ingredients to remove fish odor

Apart from the solutions given above, there are some items in the kitchen that can be used as well for getting rid of that fish smell in the kitchen. Here are some natural remedies for getting rid of that smell:

  1. Use white vinegar to get rid of fishy odor

White vinegar is an effective solution for getting rid of the fishy smell. Leave some white vinegar in a bowl, and place that bowl next to the stove while you are cooking fish. White vinegar can absorb unpleasant smells, which will leave the area smelling fresh. The best thing is that the smell of vinegar itself fades as it dries, so there’s no need to worry about the smell of vinegar lingering.

  1. Use lemon juice to get rid of fishy odor

Lemon juice has proven to be an extremely effective solution for getting rid of any strong odors, and a fishy smell is no exception. For maximum effect, take a pan of water and boil it and add some teaspoons of lemon juice. Let the mixture boil for about 45 minutes so that the smell is completely absorbed.

  1. Using apples

You can also use apples to reduce or eliminate the smell of fish in the kitchen. This is again a preemptive measure that needs to be done prior to frying the fish. Before you begin frying the fish, slice up an apple into thin slices and use them to coat your frying pan. This keeps the fish smell to a bare minimum. Don’t worry, your fish will not smell of apples this way.

  1. Boiling the peels of certain fruits

Boiling citrus peels (lemon peels, grapefruit peels or orange peels), or also helps in eliminating the fish smell. You can do this after you have fried/broiled the fish.

  1. Removing the fish smell from containers

If you need to remove the smell from pans, containers, bowls or any container, cut a few potatoes in half. Apply some table salt on the cut surface and put them in the given container for about 3 hours. After that, wash the container thoroughly.
