Clothes moths are usually beige silver in color and prefer to live in dark, hidden, humid or warm environment. It has the habit of feeding on all natural fibers like, silk, fur, wool, leather, felt and feathers. Any object or clothing made of such natural fibers is going to be victimized. It tends to lays its eggs and even form cocoon inside the warmth of the clothes in the closet.

Damage caused by infestation

It feed and chews on each and every natural fiber of your clothes in the dark warm closets; it lays eggs if the cloths have sweat on them. The clothes moths will also feed on the natural fiber clothing used for your furniture and curtains. In won’t leave anything out. On top of it, it will invade every dark and warm place it can find to lay eggs. This subsequently leads to infestation of larvae and clothes moth, and of course, more damage to clothing and other related items.   1. Cleaning up and sanitizing your home

Keep your home clean. Vacuum your house regularly, don’t leave any areas out. Use a duster to clean up the nooks and crannies and inside spaces of closets, door edges and window panels. Everything should be kept dust free. Clean up after every meal. Wash the dishes and sweep out the crumbs. Throw garbage in sealed bags and cans and dispose it of immediately. The house should look spick and span. Keep it organized and clutter free. It leaves less hiding places for the moth to hide or get tempted to enter your premises. Clean and wipe your closets, cabinets, dressers, attic and garage rooms and all su8ch dark humid places where the moths can easily hide.

  1. Going through your closet

On a regular, weekly, basis reorganize your closets and de clutter them if you can. Take out all your clothing go through each and every clothing item making sure there is no evidence of clothes moth or larva infestation in your clothing. If you see holes in your clothes, discard them. Wash your clothes and dry clean them at high temperature to remove any remnants of cocoon egg masses or larvae. Reorganize your clothes and place them in cool sealed bags. Before placing them in bags put a few naphthalene balls or Nuvan Prostrips  inside the bag or container. The vapor will serve as repellant for the clothes moth. Sweat and dirty clothes attract moths to your clothing. Freezing the clothes will kill the eggs, larva, and cocoon immediately as extreme cold temperature is unbearable for the clothing moth. If you find the infestation suck it all out with electrical dusters and vacuum cleaners. Make sure you don’t leave any behind.

  1. Treating the moth with chemicals

There are many suggestions on the insecticides that can be quite effective in eliminating the clothes moth. Few of these are as follows:

TEMPO DUST:  Scatter the dust in areas where the larva, moth eggs and cocoons are in small narrow hiding places like, the holes in the wall, the opening the plumbing pipes and electrical wires the voids in the wall, cracks holes and crevices. All these must be medicated with some chemical dust to eradicate the cloth pest.

SUSPEND SC: It is a broad-spectrum insecticide spray that work on clothes moth and other pests as well, sprinkle it around the, cracks, crevices and inside the closets as well. It will be effective in eliminating the clothes moth.

Nuvan ProStrips: This can be ideally used when you are going out for a vacation, for a couple of days and can seal off the closet. The prostrips can be kept in the house. It will terminate the whole clothes moth infestation.

HEAT POD TREATMENT:  It comes in spray and fumigation form. Applying it helps in removal of eggs, larvae and cocoon of the clothes moth. This will decrease the population of the moth and minimize the risk of damage and infestation being caused to your belongings.

Products that comprise of active ingredients like, PYRETHRUM, ALLETHRIN, CHLORPYRIFOS and PERMETHRIN, etc. Read the labels and instructions carefully and wear gloves and mask before using these chemicals. Apply them on base boards, outside perimeters of the house inside the cracks, crevices, wall voids, under appliances, attics, basements and garage rooms.

  1. Capturing the clothes moths

Place pheromone trap trays for the male adult cloth moth. The odor of the pheromones will tempt the moth to enter the tray filled with trap and insecticide. Once it gets in, the insecticides kills them. Furthermore, the female moths get tricked in believing the male are actually female moth which limits the breeding process. In addition, the trapped moth can be discarded. This minimizes the population of the clothes moth and contains the damage and infestation being caused to your home and furniture.

  1. Inspecting and arresting the moth

Keep a close eye on cloth moth, its eggs, larva or cocoon. If you see any of these you must immediately pick them out and kill, them using insecticidal soap. It will dehydrate and kill them. Once the earlier stages of the clothes moth have been controlled, the infestation and damage will also be contained.

Depriving the moth of clothing

Make sure the clothes, closets and other such places are cleaned and clothes are reorganized and sealed in bags. The house should be kept well-ventilated, and if possible, keep the temperature slightly cooler or use a dehumidifier for attics and other such places to avoid clothes moth infestation.
