How to Get Rid of Chigger Bites

Chiggers belong to the family of mites. They are normally red in color, and are found mostly on green humid areas, and underneath rocks. They attach themselves on the human skin in clusters. Usually, these mites latch onto thin, wrinkled skin and areas where the clothing is tight. Once the chigger bites by softening the tissue of the skin and forming holes they can feed for days. The bites cause itching and the skin hardens and red bumps, in forms of blisters, hives or welts may appear.


  1. Prevention and control

The first line of defense is to always avoid chiggers from latching onto you. Here are some measures to prevent that:

AVOID CHIIGGER PRONE AREAS: Chiggers are usually found during spring and fall season in southern and mid-western states that have usually warmer climate. They can be found in lake, river, underneath rocks weeds grasses etc. it is best to avoid walking in long grass and bushes etc.  

USE DEET: For those who walk in such areas should use repellants like DEET bug spray. Such sprays prevent the chiggers from biting your skin. DEET should not be used on infants under 2 months of age. Spend less time in such areas as it will decrease the chances of chigger bites.

PERMETHRIN SPRAY: It can be used on clothing to prevent the Chigger from latching on. The clothes should be sprayed two days prior and dried off. This product is recommended by the Center For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) it kills chigger, ticks and even mosquitoes. CLOTHING: If  you plan on walking through chigger infested territory you must wear tall boots, long sleeved shirts, and trousers buckled with a belt and tucked into socks. This will prevent Chiggers from coming in direct contact with the skin. Once you are out of the infested area, remove the clothing , wash them properly, and take a shower with hot water. The body must be scrubbed properly with soap. Diatomaceous Earth or sulfur powder should be sprinkled into socks and boots as it keeps the mites away.

  1. Immediate treatment

If the chigger bite has been identified , avoid itching and apply ice to the spot. A warm shower with antiseptic soap with proper scrubbing for 30 minutes will also help in removing the chiggers from the body.

Cool compress can be used; few ice cubes can be wrapped around the cloth should be pressed on the bitten area for ten minutes numbing the skin and soothing the itch.

  1. Medication

The bites could quickly turn into infections and may cause fever. It is important to take medication like    Diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Additionally, take oral antihistamines, corticosteroid creams. Few over the counter anti-itch lotions like, the calamine lotion, Benzocaine ointment and hydrocortisone relieves the itch.

  1. Scrubs for the chigger

BAKING SODA: the water and baking soda are mixed equally to form a paste like texture. This should be applied on the affected are before taking a shower. It will cause discomfort but prevent you from scratching your skin. After it dries off, a hot shower is recommended.

SALT AND VAPO-RUB: Mix salt with vapo-rub to form a proper mixture. Apply the paste on the affected area. This will sting but will eventually give relief. The Vapo-rub soothes the itch and the salt controls the spit that causes the itching.

  1. Soothe the bites of the mites

ALOEVERA GEL AND PEPPERMINT OIL: Mix1/4 cup of aloe Vera gel witha drop of peppermint oil. Applying the lotion on the affected area helps in calming down the itching on the skin.

MAGNESIUM BATHS: A cup of Epsom salt or magnesium flakes ina warm bathreally helps in calming down the affected area. If both are not available baking soda could be used.

CASTOR OIL:  This is oil recommended by entomologists on dabbing it gently on the red bumps it tends to sooth the itch.

OATMEAL: Bath products containing colloidal oatmeal while taking warm baths are found beneficial. Or a cup of oatmeal can be added to warm water while taking a bath. Soak yourself in it for 15 to 20 minutes. It natural anti-inflammatory property.

DIATOMACEOUS EARTH: These should be applied on the chigger bitten areas. It dries up the bumps and tends to heal more quickly.

  1. Eliminate the chiggers from the yard

If the yards are infested with chigger, they can best be eliminated immediately using pesticides. Sprinkling diatomaceous earth onto the lawn eliminates chiggers from the yard. There other insecticides like; Bifenthrin, Cyfluthrin and Diazinon.  There are a numbers of products that we carry here at Solutions Pest & Lawn which target chiggers. We recommend either using an aerosol spray like Microcare Insecticide Aerosol or pesticides like Essentria IC3 Natural Pesticide and Sylo Insecticide.

You must wear protective clothing while applying insecticides and follow instructions given on them. Removing weeds and identifying hot spots for chiggers using tick papers. These can be laid out in the yard and if you are able identify pink red spots through a magnifying glass. Once the areas have been detected it becomes easier to use insecticides.

Since chigger prefer shaded, moist and dense green areas, keeping the lawn trimmed and mowed properly will help in minimizing the chiggers in the future. The landscape should be well-kept with all the rotten decayed leaves removed. All shady areas must be removed as chiggers dislike sunny areas.

  1. Removing chiggers from Indoor areas

In order to prevent any chigger bites from occurring and rugs carpets and even furniture should be steam cleaned or removed. The pets should be searched for chiggers. If they have the tiny pests on their furs, they should be treated immediately. Use bleach and hot water to clean all the areas.
