How to Get Rid of Birds

Who doesn’t like to wake up to the peaceful sound of birds chirping by the window? There’s something about that calm sound that just makes your day.

However, no matter how much these sounds appeal to you, there can be no denying that birds can be a nuisance. This is mainly because they have the tendency to destroy the appearance of your property and the well-maintained garden.

In fact, as many homeowners complain, it’s not unusual to find bird droppings all over the property, even in the pool. This requires constant cleaning and disinfecting as these droppings contain diseases and are often acidic.

Besides that, are there any fruits and vegetables in the garden? Be assured that they won’t be for long with birds around.

About Birds

If you are a nature lover, you might be worried about what to do with these beautiful creatures, that can often become pests. Although most species of birds cause no problems, but their search for food will definitely work against you. Any fruits and vegetables in the garden are likely to bring in birds of all kinds and that’ll be the start of the problems for you.

There’s not even a specific species that can be a nuisance. Any bird that’s in search of food will stop by to shop in your garden. And since they are not civilized, they don’t care about ruining a perfectly ripe tomato by pecking away it. Once they realize that your garden is a source of freshly grown food, you can expect a migration.

Pigeons are the most difficult birds to get rid of because they are quite persistent. Some people might opt to shoot them but if you live in the urban locality, there are chances you might be charged for it by law.

When enough is enough and you just can’t deal any more with the nuisance the birds are causing, then instead of resorting to violence, here are some easy ways to get rid of them.

Different methods to help you get rid of Birds - For good!

Given below are different methods that are designed to help every homeowner get rid of birds once and for all!

  1. Scare Them Away

There are some people who have opted for the old ways of using a scarecrow to keep birds away. You too can do that but most people might feel conspicuous about having a straw man standing guard on their property.

There are other ways to scare them. Go for cheap plastic decoys of the natural predators of these pests. Snakes are a good option. Just put a couple of the plastic models in the area most frequented by birds and hey presto! The birds are going to be scared out of their wits and not even the juiciest fruits of your garden would make them face the danger. Other available options for decoys are eagles, swans, owls or you can take it a notch higher and go for a plastic coyote model.

Here at Solutions Pest & Lawn we have a great scare tactic known as Terror Eyes Bird Repellent. It’s a bright colored item with 3D large moving eyes that will scare birds away. A great option for those that don’t want to harm the birds in any way.

  1. Use Bird Spikes

The plastic anti-perching spiked strips are approved by the authorities and are effective in keeping birds away from elevated areas. This is an ideal repellant for larger birds like pigeons and crows. They are easy to install; you can screw them, glue them or simply tie them down.

At Solutions, we recommend Bird Flite Bird Control Spikes. They are easy to install and inexpensive. Birds will make sure to keep away from your roof or building when there are sharp spikes around.

  1. Distract them using Reflective Materials

This is a simple yet effective way of distracting birds. All you need is aluminum foil, aluminum disposable plates or CDs. Punch some holes in these reflective materials and hang them around the area most frequented by birds. Make sure you hang them where they have ample space to spin around. The more movement there is, the better they’re going to work. When light reaches them, the reflections will scare away the birds.

Metallic spinning propellers also do a commendable job of scaring these feathery pests away. You can easily get them at any garden center. Optical fire gels are also an effective scare tactic. The gel mimics the appearance of moving flames, which definitely scares the feathery pests. Apply them on roofs or edges of the building and you’ll see remarkable results.

  1. Let Sounds Do the Work

Some birds have been known to change their nesting just because of loud, harassing noises. You can get great results by playing bird distress calls. A week of playing the sounds loudly is definitely going to make the birds take their family elsewhere.

Another way of repelling these pests is to use propane cannons. They make the same sounds as that of a shotgun and the loud explosions are a sure way of scaring birds.
