How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs Fast

You know how the saying goes: “Good night, sleep tight… bedbugs bite!” These nasty little bloodsuckers are the last thing that you want in your house. Their only diet consists of blood. They’re known to suck the blood of both humans and animals. If you’ve been on a vacation, you may be bringing these unwanted guests back with you. If you’ve recently brought home a used couch or mattress. They may be hiding inside just waiting for a chance to find a blood meal.

You may be harboring these mini blood beasts in your head boards and bed frames. They typically don’t have nests the way ants or bees do. Instead, they can hide in crevices and openings, owing to the flattened structure of their body. Here’s the low down on bedbugs.

About BedBugs

Bed bugs are a type of parasitic insect that feeds only off of blood. They belong to the Cimicid family of insets. Cimex Lectularius, or the common bedbug has an affinity for human blood. A true Dracula to the core. Some other species of bedbugs enjoy a blood meal of specific animals. The bedbugs use their long, pointed beak to pierce the skin and draw blood from the victim’s body. In our case, they usually bite when we are asleep at night and crawl away unnoticed after getting their fill. A bedbug’s bite itself may not be nasty but the welt that appears afterwards due to the bug’s saliva can be very painful. Apart from skin rashes and other allergic reactions, these little horrors may cause psychological harm to their victims.

Coming back to bedbugs, although they are unable to fly, they can move pretty quickly on horizontal as well as vertical surfaces including floors, ceilings and walls. They are initially flat, oval and brown, able to squeeze through cracks the width of your credit cards. But when they have a blood meal they swell up and turn into a reddish brown color.

Female bedbugs may lay up to a 100 eggs throughout her life. Individual eggs are the size of a speck of dust. When these eggs hatch and grow to become nymphs, they need to shed their skin for a total of 5 times. That’s when they become adults. They require blood meals before each time they shed. So be careful of these nymphs, too. If you find these nasty bloodsuckers in your house, what should you do?

Getting rid of Nasty Bedbugs

  1. Blow them off

Bedbugs can’t stand high temperatures. Any temperature above 115°F will work. Set your hair dryer on high and blow up cracks and crevices where you suspect that bedbugs are hiding out. Spray your bed frames, especially any cracks in the headboards with the hot air blast from the dryer to kill off these insects and their eggs. You may need to do this from anywhere between 60 to 75 minutes. Vacuum up the remains so that there are no “allergy causing” remains of the bugs left.

  1. Thyme it out

Thyme is not just used to bring out flavors in foods or used in treating wounds. This evergreen herb has microbe fighting properties. These properties make it a strong contender in fighting and warding off bedbugs. Get some mesh bags to hang fresh thyme leaves inside your mattress, under your favorite sofa, cupboards and corners. These areas where these bugs might be hiding out. Fresh thyme leaves are available at many grocery stores so go buy a bunch of them. Replace the leaves every three days with fresh ones to get the full extent of effect. The bugs will eventually leave the house.

  1. Steam them out

Again, high temperatures and steam vapors. Try to steam your mattresses, carpets and sofas to get rid of these bugs. Don’t leave out those cushions, either. It works the same way as the hairdryer. The high temperature is highly inhospitable and kills nymphs, adults and eggs alike.

  1. Baking Soda dries from the inside out

Baking soda is another way to kill these nasty parasitic insects. The baking soda dries these insects from the inside out. Line the cracks and holes where you feel that these bugs are hiding out with fresh baking soda. Vacuum it up every 3 days and then reline the areas with fresh baking soda. Repeat this till the bugs are nowhere to be seen.
