Keith's Pro Tips

"Applying Fipronil is effective but will require patience on your end to allow the product to do it's job. It is a slow-acting chemical but effective in killing a significant amount of an insect infestation."

Fipronil

One of the most effective active ingredients on the pest control market is one of the newest, Fipronil. Fipronil is an active ingredient in a number of popular pest control products and it is one active ingredient that we can safely say was a game-changer for the pest control industry due to how quickly and efficiently it could get rid of target pests, namely ants, termites, and roaches.

On this page not only will you learn a little bit about this chemical and its origins but you will also be able to shop all of our Fipronil based pesticides which we have in stock here at Solutions Pest & Lawn.

What is Fipronil?

Fipronil application

Fipronil is a broad-spectrum insecticide that comes from the phenylpyrazole chemical family. First registered for use as a pesticide in the United States in 1996, Fipronil in its original form is a white powder with a moldy odor.

What really made the pest control industry take notice of Fipronil's outstanding effects was the product known as Termidor, developed by BASF. Noted as a game-changer for termite control, pest control professionals and manufacturers would start using Fipronil in their own products.

What does Fipronil kill? Fipronil is commonly used to control ants, beetles, cockroaches, fleas, ticks, termites, mole crickets, thrips, rootworms, weevils, and other insects

Fipronil is used in a wide variety of pesticide products and in various formulations, These include foaming products, granular products, gel baits, and liquid concentrates. There are over 50 registered products on the market which have fipronil as an active ingredient.

How Does Fipronil Work?

Fipronil is a dual-action insecticide in that insects can be affected by the chemical either by eating it or coming into physical contact with it. Fipronil works by disrupting the normal function of the central nervous system in insects.

Fipronil overstimulates or hyperexcites the insect's nerves, leaving it unable to perform basic functions like grooming and self-feeding.

Benefits of Fipronil

Spraying Fipronil on wood

What makes Fipronil really stand out is that it is a non-repellent. Insects will walk through treated areas that contain fipronil and will be oblivious to the fact that the product has been set out for their demise. Fipronil is also a slow-acting poison ingredient, allowing for affected pests to go back to their colony and spread the chemical among the population resulting in a domino effect with the entire colony being killed.

Fipronil is best used to treat against pest infestations such as termites and ants that have large colonies.

Drawbacks of Fipronil

Fipronil's slow-acting formula may be a disadvantage to those who want a quicker means of eliminating an insect infestation.

Is Fipronil Safe?

Fipronil is safe to use when applied according to label directions. Regardless, it is still important to wear protective safety equipment when applying fipronil to protect against the product being inhaled, coming into contact with your skin or eye contact.

Is Fipronil Toxic To Humans?  Fipronil is more toxic to insects than it is to humans and pets because it is has a tendency to bind more readily to the nerve endings of insects. However, if exposed to Fipronil in large amounts, it can result in health complications

Whenever you use any of our products here at Solutions Pest & Lawn, we always recommend keeping children and pets away from the area being treated until the application product has completely dried which usually takes a half-hour to an hour. Once dried, children and pets can be brought back into the area and go back to normal behaviors.

What To Expect

When using a Fipronil, keep in mind that it is a slow-acting chemical. It can take 24 to 36 hours to kill the target pest but the active ingredient does have a long-time residual which can last up to 90 days, meaning you don't have to reapply as often unless you have a very large infestation.

The slow-killing effect is so exposed insects can go back to their colonies and transfer the product to others in the population so you will need to be patient and monitor infestations to gauge how well the product is working.
