Most Carpenter ants are larger than any other ant. They range in size from ¼ to ½ inch in length. They are usually black, but some are red and black. Carpenter ants hollow their nest out of wood. They usually make their nest in wood that have already begun to decay or is rotten. Their diet ranges from insects, sweets and proteins. Most of the foraging is done at night, so a very small portion of the colony is seen. Unlike termites, carpenter ants do not eat wood.
