Solutions Self Chem Lawn Care Guide
If you have lived in Texas any length of time you know we have no shortage of weeds here. As pesky as they can be, they can be treated and even prevented under the right conditions. Once under control, some routine maintenance can keep your yard looking beautiful year round.
LATE WINTER / EARLY SPRING
The timing on this can vary, as some winters are more harsh than others, but putting down a good pre-emergent herbicide such as Barricade™ early in the year can drastically reduce the amount of weed control you’ll have to do. A pre-emergent affects any plant that germinates from a seed. It will not harm established plants, but will prevent new plants from springing up. Generally the end of January to the end of February is the ideal time for the first application of pre-emergent.
If your weeds start growing before your grass does, a broadleaf herbicide like Wipe-Out Broadleaf Weed Killer™ or Image™ may be applied. Be sure to read all herbicide labels carefully to prevent turf damage. Some chemicals have a temperature range where they may be applied safely and effectively. At all Solutions locations one of our experts can teach you the best times for each product. Most broadleaf herbicides can be applied as a spot treatment for trouble areas, or broadcast sprayed for total yard control.
EARLY SUMMER
Another application of Barricade™ in late May to early June will keep autumn weeds down and minimize the amount of weed control you will have to do in late summer and throughout the fall. As always Wipe-Out™ or Image™ may be applied to wipe out established weeds or clear trouble areas. Again, check labels for temperature sensitivity as hot weather will generally have more effect on efficacy than cold weather will.
LATE FALL
Late October to early November is when you should make your final application of Barricade™. In northern areas, grass and weeds go dormant as temperatures drop and snow falls. In southern areas your grass may or may not go dormant depending on the temperature. If it’s 74 degrees at Christmas, you could very well be doing weed control in the New Year. The Barricade™ combined with Wipe-Out™ or Image™ spot treatments will keep the lawn pretty until mid-February next year.
